Steve built Aurora’s scale General Ursus from “Planet of the
Apes” and guesses the scale is 1/6. “This was my first figure,” he says, “and
it was all hand-painted with whatever color I found worked. The yellow wall was
Humbrol linen, the black leather was Tamiya acrylic black, etc. I used a
variety of paints and weathering techniques: artist’s oil washes for ground and
wall, dry-brushed face, Testors flat for the finish on the pants, and Pledge Future
floor polish for glossy areas like the leather. The only extra was a drilled-out
gun barrel. It won 3rd place at ModelZona 2011 and I was thrilled! Always loved
the apes! There is no manipulation of the photo, just a flashlight shining on
his face (ooo-ooo).”
