After assembling and priming Legend Models’ 120mm U-boat captain, Russ painted with artist’s oils and picked out fine details with Tamiya paint and colored pencils. “The face was painted with the LifeColor flesh set, using toothpicks to burnish and blend the color demarcations,” he says. “I painted the cap the wrong color and had to sand it off and redo it. Cap details were picked out with dry-brushing and colored pencils. The figure stands on a simple dock constructed with different strips of balsa wood built on a stained craft store base. Its pinned through the heel of a shoe with piano wire, down through the dock and base. The figure was started, stopped, then finished over 10 months.”
