“One thing I have learned over many years is that not putting a model into a diorama along with a protective cover is missing half the fun,” Allen says. He built Revell’s 1/48 scale Albatros D.V, added a German pilot and mechanic from CMK, and scratchbuilt the fence, boxes, can, and mechanic’s cane. He lined the left side with fine pebbles and used various greens, trees, grass, sand/dirt, even old paintbrush bristles for the scenic details. He gave the wood enclosure a slanted front that holds a sheet of Plexiglas for a protective viewing cover that’s easy to remove. “Dioramas are a lot more work than just putting a model together,” he says, “but they provide a much more satisfying experience and final product.”
