Scratchbuilt 1/200 USS California - July 2013

Damian Petro, Kenmore, Washington

Damian scratchbuilt the USS California as it was in late 1944. The 1/200 scale ship is 37.5" long and took about three and a half months. Damian says, “The model is made mostly from cardboard, but wood, plastic, and metal parts were used. The water was made from Durham’s Rock Hard Water Putty.”

Congrats on such a wonderful and exotic scratchbuilt battlewagon!  I hope you have it displayed somewhere where you can look at it every day; that's the real trick.  1/200 is my favorite scale for warships.  I'm currently working on Ocean Voyage's 1/200 fast battleship IJN Kongo, mostly fiberglass and resin, with turned barrels of aluminum and brass.

Beautiful model Damian. I scratch build, and I know from experience how difficult it can be. Very well done indeed!
