World War II drone - December 2014

Ron Denning

Kansas City, Missouri

“With all the drones now in our arsenal, I thought it would be interesting to create my own version of a World War II parasite drone and mothership,” Ron says. Drawing from three Revell 1/32 scale P-38 kits, he combined two pilot pods and three engine nacelles to create the mothership. The radar dome on the starboard wing came from a 1/48 scale Corsair.

Ron used the P-38 leftovers to make a drone. Its contra-rotating propellers come from a Lindberg Convair XFY-1 Pogo; horizontal stabilizers came from a P-47. “You can’t see them,” Ron says, “but I added JATO rocket packs to the underside of the drone, also from the P-38 kit.” The color schemes and invasion stripes are a bonus on Ron’s “what-if” contraption.
