Trumpeter’s 1/350 scale USS Nimitz was merely a starting point for Richard, who filled the big flattop with additional aircraft, lights, and fittings. He writes: “The aircraft are mostly Trumpeter with some Tamiya planes in the hangar bay. Decals are from Starfighter. All the aircraft have rudimentary cockpits, with more time spent on those with open canopies. A mix of Gold Medal Models and White Ensign photo-etch was used for the landing gear and missile pylons. Two Tomcats on the forward catapults have LEDs; there is an Ikea under-cupboard LED lighting strip in the hangar. All the aircraft and support equipment were completed before I started on the ship.” Richard reworked all the tie-downs on the flight deck and inside the hangar, which he also detailed with wood, plastic, and resin parts. Three LEDs illuminate fiber-optics to light up the big 68 on the island. Automotive spray-can gray covered the sea, along with Tamiya acrylics and artist’s gloss acrylic gel.
