A familiar name to longtime readers of FineScale Modeler, Roscoe took on Planet Models’ 1/48 scale Hughes H-1 Special, painting the body with Floquil old silver and the wings with Testors enamel. He writes: “In 1934, Howard Hughes had the H-1 designed and built solely to set a land speed record. The most advanced aircraft of its time, it was all metal with butt joints and flush rivets, retractable main landing gear, and a tail skid. Two sets of wings were built — one long, the other short. In September 1935, with short wings, Hughes set a closed-course record of 352.38 mph. In January 1938, with the long wings, he flew from California to New Jersey at an average speed of 327.1 mph, breaking the old record by two hours. He never flew the plane again. It hangs in the Smithsonian’s Air & Space Museum in Washington, D.C.”
