David Sakrison
Ripon, Wisconsin
David used Photoshop to enlarge a 1/48 scale kit of the Apollo LEM paper model by Uhu02, a prolific designer of complex paper scale models from Japan. David built the kit as printed, at 1/35 scale, just adding the navigation markings in the pilot’s window printed on transparency film, and the cargo netting in the crew compartment. He reinforced the main landing-gear legs with cardstock and strengthened the landing gear components and the framework around the LEM by brushing the cardstock parts with thin superglue. The model has a complete interior with a removable front on the crew section. David used small magnets and thin steel strips to attach and position the removable section. The front and top hatches work with hinges made of house wrap and a magnetic “latch” on the top hatch. The model earned a Judge’s Choice award and a Top 7 award at the Winnebago Area Model Classic contest in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, in October 2022.
