Hobby Lobby SCORE! MH-60 but I Need Help
Posted by Hans von Hammer on Monday, December 8, 2008 1:59 PM

Howdy, Rotorheads.

I'm a relative FNG in the world of sling-wings, as far as building 'em goes.. (Flown in a lot of 'em, but only as a "Dope-on-a-rope") Anyhow, I scored this bird at Hobby Lobby for 27.00 bucks and want to convert it to a UH-60A, which is where all my 'Hawk flights are, and to add to that, my little girl is a 'Hawk driver and that's her bird (I think) as well (She's currently deployed to the Balkans), so I'd like to get it right...

I don't want to buy any after-market stuff though, unless there's just no way around it, but other than the obvious removal of the refueling probe and DXing the winch, what else can I do to make this bird look like the Alpha-model Blackhawk?

I've been googling the net for UH-60A pics, but it seems that the oictures are a little sparse in actually labeling whether I'm lookin' at A's, D's, L's or whatever... Need some expert Helo crew-dogs to gimme a hand, if y'all'd be so kind... Don't wanna bug CW2 Little Girl about it either.. I wanna surprise her with it doin' a sling-load of "my" Humvee in a diorama...

Also, are there any crew-figures with the SPH-56/P helmets out there?

Hey Hans.  Chances are she is probably drivin an L model, as thats the current Hawk in use.  Havent seen too many Alphas that havent been upgraded.  Is she with the 109th?  The kit has all the sprues from the standard blackhawk kit, so you should be good.  No probe, no winch, and switch the square folding tail to the standard one.  I think the rest is all in the interior such as internal fuel tank vs seats.  I'd have to dig out the two kits and compare to find anything else. I can send you some good refs I shot when we had one in Phase Maint in boone. Shows the cockpit great since the seats are removed.

Ahh, I was wonderin' if it might be a L, but I ain't that hot on sling-wings... I only flew in 'em, and even though I love to fly, I was a lot happier when I could un-azz a helo...Wink [;)]

Is she with the 109th?

She's with the Cav... But she's currently with another unit that was short on pilots and asked for volunteers...

Cool... Thanks man....

I'm guessing its the Academy 1/35 version (can't see the pic, damn Gov firewall).  If so, send me a PM w/your email address.  I have a word document that goes step by step and tells you which parts to use and which to leave off to make it an Army UH-60L.

For figures, check out this thread.  It lists just about all the 1/35 helo crew figures available.  None have definitive HGU56 helmets.  The closest/best looking ones are the Nemrod crew listed.  There is a female CAV helo pitot wearing a stetson there though.

I know a few guys from that unit though... Did Doc Greybaugh ever retire or did they prop his corpse up in the back of that UH-1 gate guard?

Hi Hans,

Your Daughter will be beside herself, having her Dad make HER helicopter for a surprise! Thumbs Up [tup]

Speaking of the A Model, I found a picture of the first UH-60 to land at Simmons Army Airfield, Ft. Bragg, late '80.      Most everyone on the airfield came up to Base-Ops to see it.

Look forward to seeing the build! Smile [:)]

    Take care,

    Frank

Yeah, I think she'll get a kick out of it... I wrote her CO to let him in on it and to ask about tail-numbers and which one she spends the most time in... Still waitng to hear back...

Viper is right.

I just got the same kit from a friend.  I can probably send you exactly what needs to be omitted/exchanged to make an accurate L.  Also some tips on a couple of simple improvements.  If you need specific reference photos, let me know.
