I have just started the scary process of converting the 1/24 Monogram kit into the XH-40, the first Huey.  I decided to do that since I'll mostly be removing stuff instead of adding stuff on to make an accurate B model.

Dave,

The "Phantom Huey" boxing with the little motor and clear fuselage can sell for over $400.  The "Tour of Duty" boxing appears to be the next most expensive, regularly in the 50's and 60's. This is the same as the Phantom Huey without the clear fuselage.  There is also another boxing as well with a Huey gunship on the boxart.  It sells for 40's and 50's I think.  However, I got the Heliswiss boxing that has evrything, including the guns and rockets for $21 delivered on E-bay.  Of course if you're making a US Army bird you'll need decals, or I would suggest going with the Fireball Modelworks Seawolves sheet in 24th scale:

The set is a great value and includes makings to build almost every HA(L)-3 bird.  I hope that helps.

The last one I picked up I found at a little five and dime store in a small community for about $22.00. It was an original Tour of Duty releases, covered with dust and the box was faded. If they would have had more than one I would have snatched them all at that price.

Next time you're traveling through a little town, if it has a little department or general store, stop an take a peek. There are a few in our area kept as closely guarded secrets, you never know what might surface from their basement or back room and appear on the shelf. I recently found the AMT F7 Tigercats...marked down from their original MSRP...I picked up several!

wow, i forgot about the Tour of Duty release! i'll have to look for one of these and pick one up. i prefer 1/24-1/25 scale over anything, but it's because i'm a car modeler i guess.

wasn't there a Rambo version too, or was that a different scale?

any crew included with this kit too?

The kit is actually a "B" model, narrow cord blades and no cambered fin on the tail boom.  It would take a bit of work to make it into a real "Charlie" model.  New rotor head, wider cord blades, wider cord and cambered vertical fin, wider cord syn elevators.

This kit was originally the Visible Huey but has less internal parts.  Too bad, the drive train worked on the Visible Huey.

The Rambo versions were of the 1/48 kit.

Mel,

Thanks for the reminder.  I thought I had mentioned it was a B but I see I didn't.  It would take a herculean effort to make a Charlie model out of it.  But still, there were plenty of UH-1B gunships so there's no reason not to dive into one if you really want a 1/24 gunship.

I recently picked up a new Phantom Huey (only box had been opened) at a model contest for $10!  The guy knew what it was and everything.  To embarassed to say what it sold for on E-bay, but it supported my habit for quite a while!

Ooh, forgot about that boxing.  I hesitate to ask, but any idea what the decals are like in that one?  I hear those Russian hueys are kinda rare!

Rambo must be in 1/35, or shrunk too.  I know Stalone is short, but that pic is rediculouse.  I'm only 5' 8" and can't stand in a Huey doorway.  The kit was pretty poor on interior details as I remember.  It would take a lot of work to make it passable.  I think it was a scaled-up kit of thier 1/48 UH-1B/C abomination.

I'm pretty sure the 1/24 kit has nothing to do with the 48th scale Huey Hog.  The only thing they have in common is armament.  Parts breakdown is totally different and there are actually parts to build an accurate B model including 204 rotorhead and narrow chord sync elevators.  Here's a pic of the Heliswiss kit.

Maybe not then.  I still think it is pretty skimpy on interior details, esp. in that scale.  You will at least need to box in the B pillar and add the interior panels and handles for the pilots' doors.

You are definitely corerect about the detail, Gino. That's why I'm converting mine to the XH-40 on her maiden flight. No doors, no B pillar, no position lights, no antennas, no skid steps, no transmission or engine cowling, no air intakes, no strakes, no stabilizer bar.  A huey stripped to the bare essentials! too bad I have to scratchbuild much of the engine and tail rotor shaft details, but still better than updating to a correct B model in my opinion.  Plus I'm having custom decals made for her so I am excited about the possibilities.

Man, I really wish that someone would come out with an aftermarket upgrade for the kit! This kit screams out for an Edaurd set and some aftermarket resin...

Who wouldn't want a great-looking, well-detailed Huey in 24th scale!!

Regards an Aloha,

Johnny B.
