1/48 scale cargo netting
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, February 7, 2009 12:39 PM
I am building Academy's 1/48 ch-53e Super stallion, I am building it in the landed position with the doors open, and would like to find some cargo netting. I would prefer the flat yellow type, but if i can't find any, I would use one made of rope. Does anyone know where I can find some online ??

I have never seen one advertized anywhere. You may have to make it yourself

Well, I have recently come back to the hobby, and for the most part, everything  I have done has been OOB. I have built a few things from scratch, but scratchbuilding (and weathering also) are kind of latin to me, so I am open to suggestion on how to build them, especially the flat yellow ones...REALLY open to suggestion

You might try thin strips of tape, paper or other such materials, then paint it

How about masking tape cut into thin strips and painted yellow, or cut out the paint and use yellow electrical tape?

The E models that I've seen on Dave Roofs CD that came with the Flying Lether Neck decals didn't show cargo nets they fold up has seats and the choppers that I did see with nets used Red.

Last year I built up a CH-47A for a cousin of mine who flew them in 'Nam. He wanted it with cargo on the loading ramp so I scratch built a couple of pallets, put some boxes on them, and covered them with a cargo net out of painted masking tape cut into strips. I found a number of sites on the internet with pics of helo cargo - 'Nam era - I used as reference and thought the end result was pretty realistic, as did my cousin. I will admit it was a bit of work, but I enjoy scratchbuilding - you don't have to worry about screwing up a one-of-a-kind piece and can always start over.

Foil or foil tape cut into thin strips...given a washing in vinegar to prep for painting has worked well for me in the past. You can make rings from wire and hooks from either flattened wire or PE fret material.

Here is another idea:  If you are conversant with a drawing program, you can produce a net pattern with appropriate "shadowing" and stitch detail and then print it out as needed.  Same as "remove before flight" flags....  Cheers!

Thanks for the ideas guys...now I have some actual work to do...lol. I will let everyone how it goes. It will be a little bit as I am waiting for some photoetch for the cockpit. I also finished my first real weathering, nothing major, on a piece of armor, but hopefully can get some pics up.
