SH-60 Seahawk with Sidewinders or Stingers?
Posted by subfixer on Wednesday, March 4, 2009 2:30 AM
Can the Seahawk be configured to employ AIM-9 Sidewinders for aerial defense? How about Stingers? How about the Blackhawk?

I have never seen it, but I assume it could be done.  There is a Stinger mount for the OH-58D and a Sidewinder mount for the Apache.  I believe the Israelis usually have the Sidewinders mounted on their Apaches.

Thanks, Arty, I had a feeling that you would be the first to come through for me. I was just wondering if there was some special plug-in systems that would allow for the use of these missiles as defensive armaments or if the systems were already installed and just needed to be configured for the missile's mounting. I suppose a Hellfire could be used against slow moving aircraft such as a transport plane or another helicopter. Hellfires can be mounted on Blackhawks, correct?

Yes, they can and are used on the MH-60L DAP and the HH-60H (below).  They are intended for ground targets though.  Blackhawks and Seahawks are not really designed nor intended for air-to-air combat.

Here´s a picture of an AH-60L DAP sporting Stinger rails. Maybe it gives You some inspiration... I was looking for some aftermarket set including those, but didn´t find any :-(

Here´s a picture of an AH-60L DAP sporting Stinger rails.

Firstly, there is no such animal as an AH-60L DAP.  Academy made up the name to sell kits.  The AH (Attack Helicopter) designation is not used for Blackhawks.  For US Army Blackhawks (and USAF Pavehawks) MH for Multi-mission Helicopter, is used.  The MH-60L DAP is not an Attack Helicopter, but a helicopter gunship.  They are very different roles and different aircraft.

Secondly, the one pictured was a demonstrator for the Aussies for their Attack Helicopter competition.  It wasn't selected.  The European Tigre, a real Attack Helicopter was.

Finally, US MH-60L DAPs usually (almost always) only use the shorter, one hardpoint ESSS wings.  It was found that the longer ESSS wings allowed too many stores, which overweighted the aircraft and led to declining flight capabilities.

The Academy OH-58D Thugs boxing has the Stinger missile mounts included.

The ATAS (air-to-air Stinger) Can be mounted on almost any aircraft (including the AH 64).

If it flies it dies.

For Army and Air Force aircraft, doesn't the "M" prefix usually denote a special ops type bird? MC-130, MH-53, MH-6, MH-47, and MH-60 all come to mind in this.

And are SideARM  missiles still around?(former AIM-9C Sidewinders modiefied with a Radar Homing seeker a la Shrike and HARM)
