UH-1C COMPLETE!!!
Posted by Ivawoody on Monday, March 9, 2009 2:10 PM

I have been out of modeling for about 10 years now...I just turned 30 and I am suddenly interested in it again. Last year my wife and I took a ride in a Huey at the Dayton, Ohio airshow, and I fell in love with the chopper, as well as all other choppers for that matter. So here is my first modeling attempt in 10 years. It's not complete yet, but I'm well on my way. Thanks for looking! Woody

Woody,

Welcome back!  Looks like you're building the 1/48 Huey Hog kit.  That's a great kit to jump back in with I think.  There are a few accuarcy issues with the kit parts, but your build is progressing nicely.  I hope to get my first ride in a Huey this weekend!  I love the old girl.  If you love Hueys, you should be right at home here.  Thanks for sharing your build.

Hi woody ,

The Huey is certainly looking good , I also like the engine detail paint job .

I've built three of those Monogram/Revell Huey's and their not the easiest kit to get together , especially the fit of the clear parts . You seem to have overcome those issue's quite nicely .

I must admit I'm quite envious about your recent ride in a Huey and also rotorwash's up-coming flight ; I hope one day I get to ride in a Huey .

Keep up the good work .

                                                  Kind regards John

Thanks for the comments guys. I will add photos as my project pregresses. I figured now, though, I would add some photos of my trip to the airshow last year: The specifications and the story of the Huey my wife and I rode:

We saw some demonstration Cobras there too. I thought they were awesome as well:

Very cool pictures! Never seen a 60 door gun with the .50 grips on the end- I'm sure all the Vietnam and helicopter enthusiasts will just Shock [:O] at me for saying that...

Nice model as well Ivanwoody- welcome to FSMforums and back into the hobby!

Chris,

Those are referred to as spade grips and are indicative of the M60D used by almost all Vietnam UH-1D/H slicks.  They were attached to the M23 gun mount as seen in the above pics.  Many times there was a brass bag attached as well to prevent FOD damage to the rotors or flying brass in the cabin.  If you look at lots of Vietnam pics you'll see that in many cases the brass bags were only fitted to the left side of the aircraft as that is the side the tail rotor is mounted on.

Welcome Woody and I think your build is looking nice. Like John mentioned about the inaccuracies of the kit, I use to never noticed them in the kits until I joined this forum. Anyway, your build is nicely done and welcome.

I had taken a 20 year break from building models but I love it now that I'm back. I can't wait until I get home so I can start building. Glad you returned, we need more Helicopter builders in this forum.

Thanks a lot Ray- very cool information. I'm trying to get back into Helo modeling and have a 1/35 Huey kit... (by Panda I think?) in the stash somewhere- want to mod it into a gunship, I'll definitly be coming by for advise.

Chris,

Glad to help.  Let us know if we can be of assistance and be sure to check out the Vietnam Huey thread and the Huey Links thread.  The Vietnam Huey thread alone takes over three hours to read from beginning to end!

Yeah I've stopped by over there a few times, so many variants and in country modifications... makes me feel like that's how the Armor forum will look in 40 years...

"Iraq Humvee thread"

A lot of really interesting stuff- sorry to borrow the thread Woody! Looking forward to the last bit of work on your 1C

LOL. No problem guys. I should have the final pics up in the next couple days. Just have to attach the skid and then do the rest of the decals.

Well, the Huey's done, with the exception of the decals...and maybe the grenade launcher...I havent decided yet. There are flaws here and there, but after being out of the hobby for 10 years, I thought this was a nice way to come back. Will post pictures with the decals in a day or two. Then off to my first of two Vipers--a 1992 RT/10.

Thanks for looking!

Woody,

Nice looking bird!  If you care about accuracy, leave off the thumper (the kit lacks any internal ammo box anyway). Also, you might look for some Army markings as the Marines flew a different model Huey with a totally different weapon's setup.  Otherwise, just use the kit decals and have fun.

I'd say you are back sir and in top form.  Please stop in and build us a helo from time to time.  Thanks for sharing tour build.

Yeah, I just decided to go through with everything the kit came with. I was mostly done with the build before I came across this site, so I would have done some things differently if I would have discovered this forum before doing the build. I put the grenade launcher on more to balance the chopper out more than anything...weightwise. It wanted to lean toward the tail just slightly, so the launcher fixed that. And I am putting the Marines decals on right now just to finish it up. Like I said, now that I found this site, I will be going for accuracy on everything else I build ( maybe with the exception of the Plum Crazy I want to paint my Viper RT/10 ), like when I build my AH-1Z when I'm done with my first Viper. I'll post the complete final pictures tonight or tomorrow. Thanks for the comments!

I'm no expert- but for what it’s worth it looks good to me! I'd love to see a shot with the grenade launcher- is it the nose mounted kind I'm assuming?

Yeah, its off the nose. To be honest, I had no idea there were all different kinds of Hueys until I got to this site. There are so many knowledgable people on here though, and I look forward to using that knowledge in my future builds. The last decals will be installed sometime today, and I'll post pictures afterwards.

OK, here are the final pictures of my Huey. I'll now be over in the Autos forum, but I will be back here from time to time, and more often again when I start my AH-1Z. Thanks for looking!

Woody,

Great build and a great way to come back to the hobby!  I hope you won't be a stranger in these parts.  We need all the helo builders we can get.  Good luck with the Viper!

Nice job!  Another kit that I have partially completed on the shelf!  I really need to get back to building one of these days!  I scratch built mini-guns, corrected the ammo box cross over feed trays and added the ammo assist motors.  I have some of the old decals sheets with the Shark's "Easy Rider".

Clear Left!

Nice build, she look's good but I gotta ask, did you paint the exterior? It look's like bare plastic to me. In my experience, decals wont stick to the bare plastic for too long, they'll just fall off, learned that early on, the hard way.

No, I didnt paint the exterior. I did wash it well before I started the build though. I started building this chopper before I found this website, so I really didnt think much about painting the exterior. I was out of the hobby for about 10 years or so, so I just bought it to do an out of the box build to get mtself reaquainted with the hobby. Now that I am a member here though, I will be taking many more steps on my future builds to create accuracy and realistic details. Thanks for the comments!

Hi

Nice work on that Huey, I really like the Marines decals. I almost see this one in a diorama.

Thanks for sharing the work.
