ah-1 whiskey//tango?
Posted by fermis on Thursday, March 19, 2009 11:19 PM
I have both, academy 1/35 kits. The tango kit is limited edition(black-n-gold), the other is the whiskey. All the parts are the same. So what's the differance...avionics? I don't want the black/gold, I'd like to do that one grey on grey and the other grey/green/black. Also I have not been able to locate any decals for a grey/grey scheme, any help?

I can't help you with the differences, but for decals, TwoBobs has two sheets:

35-001 AH-1W Whiskey's In the Mix
35-002/48-116 AH-1W HMLA-169 Shark Mouth Vipers Cobra (same sheet has also the 1/48 decals)

The AH-1T modeled by Academy is suppose to be the prototype of the AH-1W

I seemed to have misplaced my definitive Cobra book, but checked out the Italeri 1/48 Tango and Wiskey kits.  The Tango has the engine package and cowling similar to the earlier "J's".  The Wiskey has the upgraded engine package and different cowling and exhaust arrangement.  Everything else, tailboom, rotor systems appears to be the same. I'll find my book when I'm not looking for it!  As John said Academy just put the Tango prototype decals in the Wiskey kit and "renamed" it.

Clear Left!

Before the "Whiskey" designation was given to the prodution model Cobra's, the prototype was designated AH-1T+, which is what the black and gold Cobra is that Academy produced. Its the same kit as thier "W", just different decals.
