A little curious about Nighthawk and Firefly Huey's
Posted by Helo H-34 on Thursday, May 14, 2009 7:21 AM

After looking at those great images rotorwash posted on another thread I was a little curious about those Nighthawk and Firefly Huey's .

I've got a few Huey builds going on at the workbench ; I recently picked up four more 1/72 Italeri UH-1D kits to go with those great decals from Fireball Modelworks on the UH-1V "Flat Iron" Huey's as well as a couple of UH-1H/V Aircraft Survivability Equipment sets .

I have another four Italeri 1/72 Huey kits on order , so I was thinking about maybe trying to build a Nighthawk/Firefly Huey .

However the only thing I have that's close to any type of lighting system is what you get in the Hasegawa Ground support equipment set .

Anyone have any other idea's on how to scratch build some lights ???

Also were the lights only on one side of the Huey and if there was a 50 cal next to the light was there a standard M-60 in the opposite doorway ???

Like I said I'm just a little curious about a posible future Huey build .

                               Kind regards John

You might want to check out 1/72nd armor for a Xenon searchlight(check M-48's and M-60's for it), all the others you may have to scratch build.

I standard M-60 door gun would be opposite the .50

John,

  Check this thread out:

Hi Grandadjohn , thank's for the tip on checking out what the Armor kits have to offer in the way of lights and armament Thumbs Up [tup]

I dug out my tiny stash of Armor kits and took a peek inside each kit

AS you can see the Revell M-48 kit has a hexangle looking box which is suppose to represent a large spotlight .

The Academy MII26 Stryker has a really cool Machine gun/Lighting scope but I'm not sure if this looks to modern for a Vietnam era Huey Nighthawk ???

Thank's also Ray for the link on the Nighthawks and Firefly Huey's , There are some really great pic's you and others have posted , all that info will certainly help

I never thought to look at the 'links to Huey threads' , as usual the most obvious place to look first goes right over my head Confused [%-)] ; Thank goodness your around to keep me on the straight and narrow Thumbs Up [tup]

                                 Kind regards John

Glad to help out. That searchlight on the M-48 doesn't look right. I'm not up on 1/72nd armor and what's available, may want to browse online some

The M48 light may not be perfect, but it looks sufficiently like this 2/20th ARA bird to me.  The photo is from the Army Aviation Museum arhives.
