OH-58D Crew ....
Posted by modelchasm on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 7:56 AM

First, yes, I know that this subject thas gone round and round. I read all the postings that I can find on the forum and I'm very grateful for the search button .... that little thing has saved me countless times.

However, the one thing that I haven't seen, and I was hoping maybe someone here had some, are pictures of the pilots that come with the 1/35 Academy OH-58D kit. I know that some have said that they are the best crew out there (I'm sure thats an opinion, but I'm willing to try it).

I'm looking at buying the kit, both for the bird and the crew, but I'm planning on using the crew in another build (an AH-6J and later on a Blackhawk) . I don't want to buy the 58 now if I don't have to, but then again, if I can buy the 58 and get a decent crew at the same time ... better for me.

Just curious if anyone has pictures of these figures that they can post .

Thanks in advance.

I am one whom is under the impression they are the best modern crew available (in plastic at least), Nemrods UH-60 Crew is really nice.  I digress.  I used them in both my MH-6J MELB and on my UH-60L Blackhawk.  You can see them below.  Not the best pics of the pilots, but you can get an idea of them.

Nice builds there Gino. The only Nemrod 60 pilots that I've seen are meant to be out of the bird. One is standing and one is kneeling. I just remember reading on one of the other "what's the best helo crew" threads someone saying that the 58 Academy crew is pretty good.

On another note ... did you mod Dragon's Delta Force figs for the assault team on the MELB?

That was probably me on the "Helo Crew Figuures" thread about them being the best 1/35 pilots.  Here is the thread.  It used to be stickied here, but expired (only sticky for 6 mos).

The Nemrod crew is there too.  Here is a pic of them.

I did modify the Dragon Delta Force (Somalia 1993) figures with new legs and MICH helmets that were cast up by a friend to make the Operators on the planks.

Oooo .... THANKS for that Gino! Those do look nice! However, I thnk that I'm going to go with the OH-58D kit and use that kit's crew. I'll be getting two kits in one .... kinda. I was also looking at Trumpeter's CH-47D Modern crew. However, it (and other AM crew kits) are just as expensive as the Academy OH-58D kit!?!

Thanks everybody for your posts. They definately help.

Let me throw in my My 2 cents [2c]:

Being resin, the Nemrod set is the best around regarding detail and overall quality, BUT this you pay.
I saw the sprues of Trumpeter's set and the figures looked kind of "blobby", not good.
In styrene the best set remains Dragon's Vietnam helicoper crew, but sadly it's been long time OOP.
I don't know about the figures in the Kiowa set, but if their quality is like the one of the figures  in the "Huey Hog" kit I'd say go for the Kiowa (2 sets in 1 as you say). I'd be second place after Dragon's.

Thanks for the heads up Avus. How much would it take to "fix" the Vietnam era crew? Even though I haven't seen the figures from the 58 kit, I'm leaning toward that kit ... as I'd get the bird with the crew. (That's something you don't hear everyday .... hey you get a helicopter with this pilot kit!) I'm thinking I can get away with a decent plastic set since it will be mostly closed up and "hidden" in the cockpit.

Ooo... but that Nemrod set does look nice!?! ....

The OH-58D pilots are on par with the Dragon Vietnam Helo crew, but they are wearing slightly more modern gear and flight suits as opposed to Vietnam era two-piece jungle flight suits.  I would still go with the OH-58D crew.

Ultimately, I'm thinking the same thing. I'm working on two build right now and if I can get two "kits" in one, even better. I'll save the Kiowa for a future static build. From reading reviews, the engine, etc. that come with the kit make it a nice static display. First thought is to do a static display with safety/ wind cables in place on the rotors, using a mirror for the base ....

... but that build is WAY in the future. I've got a few schools and a possible deployment in front of that one.
