Painting canopy after assembly
Posted by joelrydh on Monday, October 5, 2009 2:28 PM

Hi guys!

I'm a bikebuilder since eight years that want to build a helicopter model for my father. It's a Revell Eurocopter EC-135. As I have never built a helicopter before I thought I turn to the best and ask a basic question before I start the build.

This particular model has a section of blue paint that goes over both halves of the canopy. How do you achieve that if you want to fill the seam? Is it possible in some way to put the interior in after painting the canopy (guess not...)? or is it masking madness that is the trick? Thought it could be pretty tricky to mask the glass off and then fill the seams, sand, prime and paint without getting any onto the glass...

Any tips are very welcome as I am a complete newcomer to this arena.

Well luckily on many helicopters there should be a seam where the canopy meets the rest of the aircraft.

Unforrtunately for you, I don't believe that is the case with the EC-135, so yes, you will need to mask the canopy, then fill the seam, then paint.

What scale are you going to be building in?

Thaks for the reply.

I think it is 1/32.

I guess you are right concerning the masking. I've never built anything in that way before. Of course there are masking even in bike modeling but almost only for applying a second layer of paint in a different color. Now I have to prime, and then paint both paints, blue and white and a clear coat before taking the mask away. Long process to reveal any mistakes or bleed through to the glass... But, if that's the way it has to go I will just have to do it :-)
