AMT/ERTL 1/72 UH-1D Huey kit question
Posted by viking73 on Sunday, October 18, 2009 3:46 PM

Hi, I picked up a 1/72 AMT/ERTL UH-1D kit for pretty cheap and I have a question.  Is this simply a rebox of the Italeri Huey?

Also, are there any decals for the orange door Ft. Rucker training Huey's out there anywhere?

Thanks.

Actually, it's the other way around. the Italeri kit is a rebox of the Esci/AMT/ERTL kit.  There are two major problems and a couple of minor ones with the kit.  The cabin doors have drastically different sized windows and the engine cowling is much too wide.  the tailboom is also too fat at the fuselage join.

As fara s markings for Ft. Rucker trainers, I like the idea, but there are no decals available just for them that I am aware of.  However, you should contact Joseph Osborne at Fireball Modelworks and he can probably do a set for you if you have refs.  I can supply plenty of photos of Ft. Rucker trainers if you are interested.  Fireball also makes several update sets, including a set with corrected doors for the Esci kit.

Hope that helps.

Ray,

Thanks for the info. and for the Fireball Modelworks URL.  Looks like a nice update/fix.  Is that fat tail boom really noticeable on the finished model?

I appreciate the offer of photos as well but I've got some photos of the Rucker bird that I'd like to represent.  It's a now a sad derelict close to where I live.  I'd be happy to post a photo or two when I got home if you'd care to see it.

I'll have to drop Joseph an e-mail to see what he can do about making some decals for me.

Derek,

Bottom line is the Esci kit looks like a Huey, but a Huey nut like myself can see the errors.  90% of folks who see it probably won't notice, especially with the bright orange cabin doors drawing their attention!  I'd love to see some pics of the bird you're looking to build.  Good luck with her.
