Another H-19
Posted by Aaronw on Saturday, November 28, 2009 11:33 PM

I just finished my 4th version of Italeri's H-19, this one a USAF Air Rescue Service UH-19A.

I really like this kit, 4 down, 7 more in the stash. Smile [:)]

Some of my past versions of this kit

USMC HRS-2

USCG HO4S-3G (1950s paint scheme)

USCG HO4S-3G (1960s paint scheme)

Ok, time to build something completely different.

Superb Aaronw , absolutly superb Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]

I have alway's liked the look of the H-19 Helicopter , I have 5 Italeri H-19 kit's in my stash and I'm yet to build one , what type of paint did you use for the metal finish ???

I spent the weekend tidying and reorganizing my kit stash and I'm trying to get motivated and re-start my USCG builds and looking at how great your Coast Guard H-19 came out , I'm starting to think of finishing some Coast Guards birds to see out the end of 2009 !!!

As usual I've copied your builds into the computer and I'll go and get my USCG kits down from the shelf .

Really great build Aaronw , well done Make a Toast [#toast]

Yeah, obviously I have a thing for these guys, the H-34 as well. It seems like the options are endless as so many people used them for so many different things.

The silver is just silver paint, as far as I can tell these were always painted not left natural metal because they used a lot of magnesium and magnesium corrodes very easily. Somewhere I read that these had a higher % of magnesium in their construction than any aircraft before them.

If you get going on the Revell USCG kit, two things to watch for are the seams along the fuselage / tailboom and getting the orange in just the right spot. The black stripes give you a little wiggle room but not much. Also the winch in the kit is wrong for the USCG versions, they used a winch more like the one in the UH-34 kits. Technically neither of my USCG helos are finished because I haven't got around to building a correct winch for them (and just realized I forgot to put the winch on the UH-19A).

The winch in the kit used an internal motor with a folding boom that could be swung to the side when not in use.

Now, if we could only get a quality kit like this in 1/48. The Revell kit is nice for nostalgia purposes, but it needs a LOT of work… Banged Head [banghead]
