Nice...,that's how I got started doing helos and aircraft 40 years ago...,I first built, of course some 1/25th cars,Space/Rockets...,then,Revell/Hasagewa/Tamiya 1/720-700 scale Battleships and Carriers, and having only an Encyclopidia Brittanica with a few photos the evening news reports/newspaper and just the start of hobby mags and occasional reference series of books,ie;WW II ,Vietnametc.
I and a cousin I visiting at his parents owner/managed motel in Kimball,NE (Slumber 'J') went to the '5and Dime store' or Woolworths and each bought a Revell kit to build along with our pint of Creamery ice cream(yes,1 each!!)
I bought the USS Hornet (CVS-12) with Apollo 12 capsule "Moon Landing Recovery Carrier" since the year before and still active was that very subject!!
Later another cousin in the same relations Father in Law,I met when he and his wife came to CO with cuz and the wife...,he served on Hornet during 1969-70 and the recovery mission!!
I had also recently obtained a book (about late 1990's) called USS Hornet (CV/CVA/CVS12) from Turner Publishing Co.,which later came out with "Splash Down-US Navy Space Recoveries" which deals with all the types of ships/aircraft used since the beginning!!
Anyway my cousin got the still avaliable USS Enterprise (CVA/CVN-65) in its 1969 config.
Hornet had the SH-3s,E-1/C-1s and "Big E" had F-4/A-4/E-2/SH-3s as the re-release today still has!!
I noticed that there were a LOT MORE aircraft models than carriers,so I stared building,Monogram/Revell 1/48 then 1/72 scale aircraft...
I found a kit in the same mold as CVS-12,some years ago in this magazines Sell section her sister Gemini 5 recovery vessel CVS-18 USS Wasp...it's in teh orignal boxart box SOMEWHERE in my storage!!
P.S.I have a question also posted on an earlier thread Group Build post:
Copy/Paste here:
Since I haven't recieved a reply for an older post,on the ARC site yet...,on the subject of paint scheme:
Dragon instructions suggest just a two gray scheme on these two colorful tail draggers.
Top:36320
Bottom;36375
with either a matt/flat black or Insignia blue 35044 tails,*which incorrectly include the tail rotors!!
My reference for the Seahawk/Knighthawks show a 3 tone gray TPS
Top of engine/anti-glare/TPS markings:35375 Blue-Gray
Entire fuselage,below top of above,except bottom of cabin/moveable tail horz.stab:36320 Dk(Ghost) Gray
Bottom of SH-60B radar dome/and all versions cabin/tail stabs:36495 "Very" Lt Gray
But of course for this small of scale..,all would be toned down or an alternate of 36320 top engine/anti glare,36375 rest of fuselage,36495 bottom could work?
