Dragon 1/35 Scale UH-1D Kit Decal Question
Posted by abunn1 on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 5:51 PM

Can anyone that has built this model confirm if the decals and paint scheme shown for the 114th AHC are correct?

I have researched this online and have found several pictures of 114th AHC UH-1s, and it seems that there was no standard color scheme.

Some of the helos have the black anti glare panel paint going all the way down between the lower windows, and some have the black glare panel stopping at the top of the two lower windows.

The kit color scheme shows the top of the cockpit being painted white.  Most of the 114th Aviation Company birds I've seen online do not have white at all on this portion, or have a single white stripe painted across the top.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Much of the variation has to do with the time the aircraft were in service, where they were operating from and what the crew chiefs, squadron commanders and US Army deemed appropriate. Given these aircraft go through major overhaul frequently (due to high usage) aircraft are often not returned to the original unit but are redistributed to other units as they emerge from depot. Hence many of the aircraft in any given unit may have slightly differing appearance.

It was true in the USAF whether it was our UH-1s or our KC-135s...you'd send a really pretty bird off to depot only to get someone elses POS back. Mechanically sound (most of the time) but needing some TLC and cosmetic appreciation to be attractive once again. Its even worse when you are a new unit being stood up...you get everyone's junk.

We once sent a UH-1 to Corpus Christi that had been condemned by our inspectors...less than a week later it was flying with an Army NG unit in the neighboring state. It got a check flight and they deemed it fine for Army use. They didn't seem to mind that it had a nasty personality in flight...it was better than what they were already flying!!! LOL The Army pilots thought AF pilots were spoiled...but they really appreciated getting our hand me downs.
