Helicopter Skis
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, January 15, 2004 2:46 AM
OK guys and Gals,
Here's something I was wondering and I want to get your opinions. I'm planning on making several models of Alaskan helicopters (CH-47, HH-60G, UH-60L) and while I considered making the skis that we use up here from scratch, I also considered writing Cobra Company and seeing if he was interested in producing them in resin. First look at the pictures and then also consider that they're not just simple flat skis. There's a lot of compound curves and other detailed fittings involved, including a folding main ski on our HH-60G's on the right side so we can employ our hoist. The ski folds down. Hopefully you'll think like I do that one of these helo's with the skis would make for an interesting addition to your collection.

Well there you have it. I think I'm going to ask Cobra Company regardless but I'm trying to get an idea on interest. Any of you interested in doing a model like this??? What scales would you like to see???
Thanks for your responses,
Salbando

As a matter of fact, before I PCSed out of Eielson AFB last year, I shot a full spread of reference photos of the MH-60G's there and the CH-47's at Ft Wainwright. I've been toying with the idea of building them in 1/72 scale for some time. Those skis definitely add a unique touch. It'd be nice not to have to scratch-build them.

Hey Doug,
Who were you with at Eilzone?? I probably pulled alert up there (I fly on the MH-60G's you saw) at least a dozen times while you were there. Did you ever see Barney the purple beast?? It was an old S-55 painted purple that a civilian contracter used for range support.

Everyone else,
Thanks for the feedback and keep it coming. It'll help make my case with Cobra Company.

Before you posted this topic I saw a picture of a Pavehawk with skis and thought that it could be a nice variant for this helo.
From my point of view it's a go for a conversion kit.Thumbs Up [tup]

Hey, I just found some photos showing a Dutch AF CH-47D with skis! I thought the only ski helo's were up here in Alaska. Gives me even more ammo to make my case for Cobra to make them.

It looks like the same skis manufactured here in Alaska.

Sal,
I was with the 354th SFS. I worked with the guys from Det 1 on several occasions to coordinate aerial searches and medevac. They were a great bunch of folks. It's unfortunate that our schedules never matched up so I could take a hop with them. Yes, I have seen Barney, although I always thought he looked blue (maybe it was the cold?). So where do you spend most of your time out of? Elmo or one of the smaller fields? When I come back up to shoot my bear or moose, I'll say "hello".

Reddog-03,
Yeah, Barney is actually a purple-blue, but for some reason over time the blue hue seems to be standing out the most.
My time is spent all over the place but mainly out of Anchorage. There's only a few folks permanantly assigned to the Det and there all MX folks. All of us from the squadron (helo side and PJ's) pull alerts up at Eilzone. For us there's very few missions so we spend alot of time at the gym. The helo crew do mostly range support, and if necessary do rescue missions as they come up. Were you here when we went lookin for that TSgt who took off one day after his wife and kids registered for school? We worked with the SFS folks on that one. Other than that you more than likely gave me the once over at the gate after we took in the local color of North Pole or Squarebanks.
Been doing lots of TDY's but that comes with the career field. With where we been going for the last 10 years, they need to make the desert BDU and flight suit the standard USAF CSAR uniform!

I got to "the base that time forgot" in Feb '02. I was the Ops Officer during my tour there. The TSgt who took off on an ATV in Sep '01 was just before I got there. However, I was on the team that recovered him in Jun '02. After significant disinfecting, I secured his .357 revolver and removed 5 live rounds and 1 spent casing.
Hope my guys didn't give you too much trouble at the gate. The gate was a genuine pain in the fourth point of contact for us, too. I had a total of about 3 months when half of my manpower wasn't deployed. Most of the visiting COPE THUNDER aircrews used the term "local color" to refer to The Refinery in North Pole or Fantasyland out on the Rich. There just wasn't much up there. Nothing like ABC down in Anchorage. No real hobby shops up there, either. I got to shopping over the internet on a regular basis.
As for the desert BDU's, I'll wear 'em as long as I don't have to wear the blue tiger stripes they've cooked up.

reddog,
Yeah I avoid the place whenever possible. For us it was lot's of trips to the gym. Yeah, we never got much info how that search turned out. Thanks for the follow-up.
We're lucky in that we (PJ section) get a lot of leeways as to operational uniforms. The tiger stripes are not on my list of favorites either.

Yeah, if Cobra made an aftermarket ski kit for HH-60s, I'd get one (1/35 personally).

The Pave Hawk bug bit me after I read "The Rescue Season" last summer. Between that, Hobby Lobby marking down their kits 50% last week, your feedback today on my topic and discovering that I'm not the only one interested in a ski kit... it's looking like I'll have an Alaskan bird on my shelf in the near future!

Yeah, that book was written about my squadron, and in particular the guys in my section! There's even a picture of me in the book. Guess I'm famous (heh, heh).
