Yes, the primer color is zinc chromate yellow.  As Hawkeye noted, they do chip a bit, but it is quickly touched up to prevent corrosion.

There was some chipping...anytime you introduce moving metal parts into and environment that produces flying debris.

These aircraft depending on service area faded and oxidized a lot. Any bare metal would be quickly treated (spray can) to prevent corrosion.

I'm building the Dragon 1/35 Huey 1-N and want to give it some chipping and wear - need to know the primer color...I imagine it was zinc chromate yellow, but not sure. BTW, did these craft actually chip very much while in service?
