One more piece to the puzzle!  Iraq has these as well as Mi-171's.  The -17-V5's have a different ( slightly darker and glossy pattern than the -171's.

I have some pictures of Iraqi Mi-171s but thanks for the info.  I have seen a couple with a long nose like a -60 or a 412 and I was trying to figure out which designation to research..  The color info you provided helped me to confirm the subject of a couple of photos that I have.

 

 

OK, the version with the long nose you're refering to is the Mi-17-V5, which is the export designation of the Mi-8 MTV-5.

The Mi-17-V5 is used by the Afghan army and Canadian Armed Forces among others.

My project is coming along well considering the circumstances.  My next step will be scratching the ramp.  It shouldn't be too hard.  I think that I have good enough photos that I can use a little creative gizmology to get it to look the part.  I don't have any paint here and I will have to wait until I return to the land of the big hobby shop to assemble the kit.

I just noticed you post, so I hope I'm not too late to help you.

As for the question about length; I've seen an Mi-8 and an Mi-17 parked together. if there isa difference in length, it's very small and not discernable with the naked eye on the ground.

The Mi-17 has the older style clamshell cargo doors while the 171 has the newer ramp at the back.

Outside of the clamshell/ramp style cargo door; the biggest differences between the 17 and 171 are seen on the right side of the fuselage and the tail boom.

Here's an Mi-17 (sorry for the poor scan quality):

The most noticable differences are:

The movement of the oil cooler from the front end of the right side sponson to a spot further up on the fuselage side, between the rotor and the side cabin door.

Equipment housing moved further aft along underside of tail boom.

 

As for the cockpit:

Outside of the switch from the classic, lurid Soviet turquois colour; some of the older analog instruments have been replaced by digital counterparts.

Additionally, the instrument faces and placards in the Mi-17 were all in Cyrilic, while the Mi-171 has them all in English.

You did make mention of of an avionics compartment on the nose of the Mi-171; which I'm assuming you were refering to a blister like fairing of the sort on this Croatian example:


I've been told it houses everything from a weather radar to a GPS antenna. In the cockpit, the only difference seems to be the presence of a small general purpose screen bolted to the upper right corner of the left side main instrument panel and another indentical one bolted to the upper left corner of the right side main panel.

It is an option that is not seen on all Mi171s, as evidenced by the Czech machines:

I am trying to figure out the difference between the Mi-17 and the Mi-171.  I see two basic variations of the airframe flying.  One has the plain nose section and the other appears to have a different avionics suite, as evidenced by the addition of an avionics bay on the nose.  Both have a rear ramp instead of clam shells for rear access.  Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

One other question.  I have seen references to there being a slight difference in length between the Mi-8 and the Mi-17 but have not been able to find a definite answer to this question at this time.  I am waiting on the Hobby Boss kit to arrive and I understand that it is a scaled down Trump kit which is based on the Mi-8.  The difference may not be worth the trouble as I simply want it to look the part.

specific reference material can be kind of difficult to get over here and any help is greatly appreciated.
