The pictures available at Reuters of the Bin Laden raid had me scratching my head. The news reported that Blackhawks were used, but the remains of the destroyed helicopter does not look like any setup or mods I've seen on Blackhawks before. Then again I am not a helicopter pro, so figured I would turn to those that are.
Anyone have any input to clarify what is in the pictures?
Some of the photos, if you go past the helicopter shots, are very graphic. http://www.reuters.com/subjects/bin-laden-compound

Ya got me on that one. . . . . looks similar to the stabilator system on the -60 but the tail rotor assembly (if I'm seeing things correctly) is much different. Any -60 that I've seen hasn't had a cover and the fairing at the top is slightly different. doesn't look like the uh-60M model either. now i'm confused, and i flew the darn things for awhile! the 160th SOAR might have something new they're using

The news said this morning that it was a heavily modified blackhawk. They said when the helicopter went down due to mechanical difficulties (im guessing lead in the engine) the seal team destroyed it but the tail section fell outside of the compound and they couldn't get to it.
Heres a guess of what it might have looked like.

Some of the other sites have been debating it for a couple days. There is no definitive answer. The drawings out there are all conjecture based on a suspicious tail section that may or my not be real.

I posted an article from the Air Force Association which quotes sources at Sikorsky that they have a limited number of modified Blackhawks undergoing testing. These aircraft are specifically for black ops and rescue purposes and are not widely publicized because both Russia and China are wanting to produce a stealth helicopter as well.
This Stealth Blackhawk was proposed more than a decade ago, apparently some funding has found its way to produce a few prototypes.
Radar absorbing fabric covering over the fuselage, discs over the rotor actuators and blades which reduce vibration thus making them quieter. A helicopter's sound emissions is its weakness...the thumping or beating sound it emits travels far ahead of its path.

With that cat (or rather Blackhawk) now out of the bag, I wonder when we'll start seeing photos of the actual aircraft?
Elsewhere, I'm reading some speculation it is a whole new aircraft, built of composites. The people saying that (who claim to be familiar with Blackhawks) base their theory, in large part, on the fact that the burned-out hulk left at the compound lacks the structural frames you might expect to see after the aircraft is consumed in a fire. No idea if there's any truth to that or not. Just thought I'd mention it.
I bet it looks something like this one...
Oh man, tooo funny, Stik!
AMERICA!!! **** YEAH!!!!
My dad was an aircraft engineer for many years, including stealth projects. When I asked, he told me the following:
"I've seen some of the stealth stuff for Cobras and Seahawks but not this particular bird. They may have borrowed the stealth technology from the Comanche stealth helicopter. I Can't tell what I know about RPGs and blackhawks in Afghanistan."
One thing I learned several years ago is, if i ask my dad an aircraft question, and he says he can't talk about it, I later find out it was because I was on the right track!

Hello guys here's a link full of photos on this subject:

Anyone think this sounds like Son Tay, 1970--intentionally crash landing in a court yard in order to get the assault team in quickly? Pieces left behind 'disinformation'--or not enough time for this?--and why would we do it anyway? I'll wager the answer to this will be found on a modelling forum before the "experts" on the news get it right!! I trust the sources here before the press corps!

Good choice. Kind of like how fictional writers will figure out what will happen in the world before the Expert analysts" do.

The sacrifice of one helo to successfully accomplish the mission is a cheap price. It sounds a LOT like Son Tay to me. Support elements can land outside after the assault element and breach after the fact.
