1/35 photo-etch M-2
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, January 23, 2004 11:57 PM
Hi, New to this forum thing. I'm poking at the academy 1/35 DAP kit with a stick and have noticed the .50 cals are really goofy. Any suggestions about photo etch parts for 'em...the ring sights, butterfly handles, etc. Never used photo etch before and am not real anal about super detailing, but these m-2's need some help.
Thanks

First of all welcome to the forum. Sign - Welcome [#welcome]
You'll see that almost every post gets at least an answer.

This is mine:
Verlinden Productions
(http://www.verlinden-productions.com/vp_htm_0001_0400/vp0372.htm) makes a set of M-2 in resin with photoetched parts. These parts do not include ring sights, but since you are working on the DAP you might be interested in the PE by Eduard's for the UH-60 (http://www.eduard.cz/./products/card.php?id_product=2184&name=uh-60&catalogue_nb=&type=&pgroup=&scale=&product_month=&product_year=&page_start=0). This kit also includes ring sights for the M-60.

Two ideas for you. In an earlier post here by Salbondo, he is a crewman on HH/MH60's, he pointed out that the .50 cals aren't used on active duty birds.

QUOTE: I've been with an HH-60G/HC-130 rescue squadron for the past 14 years. Here's the deal. If your doing an MH-60G then go right ahead with installing the .50 cals. If you're doing an HH-60G, leave them off. The HH-60G is simply a rescue version of an MH-60G. When the 55th SOS went away a few years ago, so did the only MH-60G's. Their helo's went to various rescue squadrons. This shows a simple fact, and that is that the MH-60G and HH-60G are basically the same with the same systems. Especially since all HH-60G's now have FLIR etc. As far as the .50 cal's go, the only time I ever seen them installed was at the tactics center down at Nellis AFB Nevada, with the 422 TES. They were the ones that came up with the idea for the high bird to have the .50's along with the GAU-2B miniguns, to act as a heavy cover ship for the low bird (pick-up bird). The idea was that the .50 cals would extend the range that the GAU-2's didn't have (especially in the sand box), and to add a semi-hard target capability.
Truth be known, I've never seen this done operationally in any MH-60G and I can tell you that we don't currently employ the .50 cal's in our HH-60G's.
In fact, the only .50 cal's we have in our armory are the .50 cal Barrett sniper rifles we have in our PJ section.

I was stationed at Ft Stewart, GA (near 160 SOAR at Hunter AAFin Savannah) and didn't see any of their DAP birds with .50 cals either. Looking for them on the web comes up blank as well. I think Academy just left them in the kit from the MH-60 kit.

If you still want them on your model, I would recommend the new Academy Machine Gun set. it includes .50 cals with air jackets on the barrel and they are awsomely detailed. And the whole kit only runs about $6.00. Here is a review of the kit.

Hope all this info helps. I too am planning on building the HH-60 K (DAP) kit sonn. I have been collecting referances and detail parts for a while. Good luck on yours.

Wow. I appreciate the responses, everyone. This forum stuff could be habit forming. I've learned that the only stupid question is the one that isn't asked...in other words, I'll prob'ly have lots of 'em coming up. Don't know if I'll be able to answer any myself, but I'll try.
Thanks again

Big Smile [:D]WOW! Big Smile [:D] First time I've been quoted on this forum, and by a Major!!! Thanks sir.
Actually, what I originally posted is true.

I'll go a step further and tell you that when the 160th DAP configured their birds in Mog, it was to keep up their currency in the DAP by doing gun/FFAR training down the beach. They never (that I remember) used the DAP configuration operationally during Gothic Serpent (TF Ranger).
Now, those times that I saw them DAP configured on the ramp, they never had .50's on them. FFAR's, M-134'a and a single M-230 30mm chain gun is all I remember seeing.

One other thing for HeavyArty,
I hope I didn't confuse you and maybe this explanation is not necessary, but what I said about the MH-60G's being no more is true and they were all rolled into the rescue squadrons as HH-60G's (basically the same airframe anyway). The 160th SOAR does, however still operate the MH-60L, and MH-60K. These ar Army aircraft, whereas the MH/HH-60G are USAF aircraft. The M precursor indicates Special Operations, and H indicates Rescue. This is more of a mission indicator and not a cpability indicator.
Also, the aircframe that the 160th configures (as necessary) into the DAP role is the MH-60L and not the MH-60K. I'm fairly confident of this as that is what they had in Mogadishu.

Hope that clears the water instead of muddying it up.

Sal,
I understand the lettering system and difference between Army and AF birds. Thanks for clarifying it for others though. I may have confused some with mixing them in my post.

Also, thanks for the early promotion. I'm actually a Captain, should make MAJ within a year though.

No problem HeavyArty. I've been eligible for MSgt for a couple years now. We don't have the slot, but one should become available this summer.

Anyone know where I could get some photo etch cockpit details like the colored ones that can be put on the intrument panels. Sorry for all my lame questions but i have never used aftermarket kits or details before.

Also, one more question :) Where could I get a hold of the weapon pylons for other weapons and those sexy fuel tanks?

Thanks
