MBB BO-105 chopper
Posted by John Lyle on Thursday, May 26, 2011 8:01 AM

I am presently getting ready to build the Canadian icebreaker Norman Macleod Rogers in 1/72 scale. It had a MBB BO - 105 helicopter on board. Does anyone know if there is a 1/72 scale model kit of this chopper out there somewhere? I am not too bad at scratch building model ships but scratch building a helicopter??? .....Not so good...... in fact pretty damn grim. Even something I could perhaps convert would be a help.

Any help about this helicopter would be appreciated.

Hi John,

There was  a German Army version by Airfix in 1/72 long, long ago. I have no idea of its current availability.

There's a build log here: http://airfixtributeforum.myfastforum.org/Airfix_1_72_MBB_BO_105_about24739.html

Sure thing. There was more than one kit of that baby. Please check this out:

Hope it helps, good luck with your icebreaker and have a nice day

Not 100% sure about whether or not Fujimi did one in 1:72 but they did in 1:48

I'm planning on making this into Chuck Aaron's Red Bull Aerobatic Demonstrator.

Here is Chuck preflighting before his performance. You  can see a T-33 that has just landed in the background after a Warbirds performance.

Thanks for the info and pictures.

I found a source for two MBB BO -105C Airfix models (1/72 scale) which I will be getting as I may do more than one icebreaker. I haven't even started assembling the hull yet ( just have the frames and keel cut out)  and already someone wants to buy it when I am done. Don't know if I really feel like doing that as then it becomes a "JOB" and not a fun pass time

What is the difference between the 105 and the 105C models?

I also found out that another helicopter that was used on this ice breaker was the Allouette. I found some of them in Squadron.

Hi John,

There are two fuselage lengths for the Bo105 the standard 105 is the shorter fuselage while the 105CBS is lengthened by 12" so it can accommodate a larger stretcher unit.

The easy way to tell them apart is that the CBS has an extra window behind the rear cabin doors. There were other minor changes, but that is the big tell.

I don't know what version the Airfix model is.

I hope this helps.

That helps. I wonder if I can shorten the Airfix model as I want a MBB BO -105 not a MBB BO-105C. The other option is to use an Allouette helicopter that was also carried by the Norman Macleod Rogers.

Or I could follow the philosophy that "a blind man running for his life won't see the difference" and just use the 105C.

I lengthened the revell 1:32 105 using two kits.

Shortening the 1:72 shouldn't be too hard.

I believe the BO-105C as represented by the Airfix kit is the original "short" version (the "105C" being the standard production version).

The BO-105CBS is a different version and is lengthened as described above.
