Academy 1/35 - Desert Storm?

Regarding the 'first into Iraq'. Note that I specified 'slick'. Double Vision was the lead ship for the ground assault into Iraq. You are all certainly correct about the Pave Lows and Apache mission being the first helicopters into Iraq ... UNLESS there were special ops birds there first ... as again I noted in my comments.

As far as 1/35 kits go, these are all I can think of. You guys probably know several more than I've listed.

Yup, first helos in were 3 MH-53Js that were leading 3 platoons of Apaches from the 1-101AVN. There's a good account of it in "Lightning in the Storm" by Thomas Taylor (General Maxwell Taylor's son). They were tasked with eliminating a key radar site that controlled all the air defenses in that particular area. Taking them out opened up a corridor for our fast movers to fly on to Baghdad unmolested.

Imagine flying at 50 feet and 30 kts for 100+ miles! That's gotta be trying on anyone's endurance.

For the record I DID respond to Jame's question, prior to having a little fun. It's all Papa Echo's fault.
Anyway, his original question was Academy 1/35 scale models of Helos that served in Desert Storm. I'm not going to repeat the info in my post except to say that the UH-60L (I think maybe a few), UH-60A, AH-1W, MH-60G (towrds the end) and A/MH-60L DAP are all Academy 1/35 scale Helos and served in Desert Storm. The OH-58D was not involved and was not developed in time to be in Desert Storm (pretty sure about that), but there were OH-58C's.

I think the first Helo to cross the fence were twp MH-53J Pave Low III's escorting a gagle of Apaches to take out an air defense radar node.

If you want the best results for a 1/35 scale Desert Storm bird, stick with the UH-60L, AH-1W Super Cobra or the OH-58Ds from MRC/Academy. You just can't beat them for quality straight out of the box. As for Desert Storm markings, the UH-60L kit has markings for "Double Vision", the flight lead for the 101st assualt on LZ Cobra on the opening day of the ground war. Double Vision was the first slick into Iraq (excluding any 160th SOAR birds that likely visited before the official start of the war) It's featured on the cover of my book ... "H-60 Black Hawk in Action". Note that it's actually an 'A' model ...not a 'L' as the model says. It's great as is but add the Eduard PE sets (interior and exterior) and you just can't beat it!

Ok, here's the deal. The Imex/Kangnam kit is OK, but needs a LOT of work to make it accurate. Their A model is better than the D, simply because they just modified the avionics bays and stuck a radome on the A model to make it a Longbow. The interior is accurate for an A. AH-64Ds, whether Longbow-equipped or not, did not serve in Desert Storm. They weren't fully developed until the mid-late 90s.

If you look through the archived pages on this forum, I did a kit review on the Imex AH-64D. If you're willing to put in the work, it will come out to be a nice kit, if not, its an Apache-shaped lump of plastic.

Were there AH-64D Longbow Helicopters in Desert Storm?

Imex/Kangnam have that 1/35th kit too.

They also make an AH-1T and an AH-1W.
I believe that both were used by the Marines in Desert Storm. But those are the only other one's that I can think of by MRC.
I believe Tamiya may have done an AH-64, but I'm not sure.

First off welcome. Secondly, "Strange Brew" was one of the funniest movies I ever saw. But then again I've been called twisted.

They had a few UH-60L's in Desert Storm but they did have a bunch more UH-60A's. Academy makes an MH-60G in 1/35, but the only Pavehawks to show up for Desert Storm arrived towards the end (55th SOS birds). They were painted in a pretty cool 3-tone desert scheme. Academy also makes an OH-58D in 1/35 but these were developed after Desert Storm. Academy makes an A/MH-60L DAP which did fly in Desert Storm. The 160th SOAR used them for SCUD hunting.
