UH-60l and transporting

I'll preface this by saying that I fly chinooks, not hawks. The Blackhawk is advertised as being able to carry a 105mm howitzer (approx 5000lbs) it's crew of 6(approx 1500lbs) and 30 rounds of ammo (660lbs). So it should be able to carry a non up-armoured humvee (approx 5500lbs) and a crew of 4 (approx 1000lbs).  These figures would  be at sea level on a standard temperature day of 15 degrees celcius. Hope this helps, I look forward to see this built.

As Hookdriver says above, yes, it could carry the vehicle and crew.  It would not be common to have the crew repel down after the HMMWV though.  The helo would usually lower the HMMWV down, disconnect, then fly off a few meters and land to let the crew out.

Thanks, been thinking about adding some lights also, make it real interesting.  Ill have to do some thinking some more on it.

You may consider doing a gun raid.  The Hawk slings a 105, ammo and gun crew.  They drop the equipment and crew.  The gun crew does a fire mission and the Hawk comes back and picks them up.  Gino can shed much more light on the subject but I remember doing this up near Bragg years ago and having lots of fun doing it.

As far as load capabilities in general are concerned, the cargo hook on a L can carry 9k lbs.  Stateside, a L has about a 7k useful load capacity.  A standard HMMWV is no problem at all but not an up armored or TOW.

BTW Gino, I am very interested in how that MedEvac set works out.  Maybe they will do an HH-60M interior before too long as well.

I too have a plan to slingload an M102 Howitzer.  Here is a diagram with and without the M-22 Cargo Bag for ammo.

thanks, ill have to print them off and blow them up.  how many personal crewed the 102/105.   did the 102 see service in the last wars?  and does the 105 sling the same way?

did they still para-drop the gun and crew or just land one at a time?

The M102 has been used as recently as 2008 by NG units in Iraq.  It is a 105mm howitzer.  The current 105mm Howitzer is the M119A2.  Both of these are at the FM link and it shows how to rig them. 

For 1/35 models, the M102 is available from AFV Club in plastic at around $15.  The M119A2 is only available from Mouse House Enterprises out of Australia in resin at about $75 plus shipping.

I recently did the M119A2.

A 105mm towed arty piece usually has a crew of 4 Soldiers or Marines.

As to Airborne ops, yes, M102s and M119A2s are still para-dropped on pallets.  The crew parachutes in separately.

Here is an M101 105mm Howitzer (WWII and Korean War era) rigged on a pallet for Airborne ops.  Actual para drops are not that common any more.  They are pretty much only used in training and haven't been used in combat in quite a while.

This could be a tough dio in 1/35.  As you can see in the pictures, 10k lb sling legs are not very big compared to the aircraft.  They are about 1 1/2" thick (give or take), so scale sling legs may be a little weak for a model that size.  That being said, you do have four legs to support the weight of the model and the weakest point may be at the aircraft.  I think that the key here may be in concentrating getting it to look right rather than scale accuracy.  Let me know if I can help with info from a crewchief's perspective.
