Huey front seats.
Posted by neilsmadabtchoppers on Tuesday, January 27, 2004 10:47 PM
I have a few huey models from various model manufacturers and each kit has different front seat configerations.

Does anyone know how many different styles and designs of seats were produced for the different models of hueys and did Agusta make different seats as well.

I have seen for example papa-echo-64's model 1/24 with the green seats and armour plate and the seat belt mechanism on the back of the seat. A TH-1F Huey locally has red material over a light frame and seat belt bolted to the floor.

I would appreciate all the info you good people can provide.

Neil,
When I first started crewing Hueys in the early '70s, only the older models had red fabric seat covers. All the later models had the green covers which in the case of the pilot seats were actually a fine mesh material. Also, all the birds I've worked on had the lap belts anchored to the floor and the shoulder harness were attached to the back of the seat via an inertia reel.
Hope this helps.

Picket is on the money!

It's hard to see my lap belts but they are bolted to the floor.
all the Hueys I have seen up to the H always had the same belt configeration.

I have been told that some Hueys in Nam had green seat material....iz dat true?
Straighten up and fly right.....

I was in Vietnam in 1971 and I didn't seen any red seat covers for pilots seats or troop seats. Once the Huey was used extensively in Nam I think the red went out the window and the OD green became standard for all seats. I would guess by the late "60" there weren't many red seats except statesides and other non-hostile enviroments. The Army had one armoured seat and the Marines have a different one in their "N's". I think the internal frame for the covers were all the same.

Clear Left!

Even though I graduated as a 67N20 (Huey mech) in 1973, my Guard unit still had two CH-34s and about three UH-1Bs (one of which had bullet hole patches). The B models were early to mid 60's production and at least one of them had red seats. None of the H models that filled out our company had red seats. That would certainly agree with Mel's personal experience in 'Nam.

There are many front seat configurations. Civil and Military and I'm sure some of the foreign manufacturers used their own seats. I've seen the Hard Armored seats from US Army contracts and flown some. Some of these were in USMC versions. The UH-1E's that I flew had those, and some had the civil web seats and some were an aluminum "bucket" with cushions (those were the hardest seats I've ever sat in). The UH-1N has a completely different kevlar framed seat with the mesh webbing velcro'ed in (I have never seen these replicated in any kit). The seatbelts were bolted to the frame not the floor, at least originally. It was found that in accidents, the front seats exited the aircraft through the windshield. But that was at a Gazillion G's, so it really didn't matter.

So the bottom line is that there probably are MORE versions of seats than are replicated by model companies. You having seen several that were most likely valid variations. So you can feel comfortable putting them in, unless you are following photo documentation.
