Huey UH-1 D/H "Nighthawk" builds?
Posted by PBRStreet gang on Saturday, March 17, 2012 6:50 PM

There was a good thread going a couple of years ago...

Anyone actually build one, or in the process of building one of the Hueys used in Viet Nam for night attack?

Been out the hobby for awhile handling some family medical matters.

I resurected this build, just finished the first component.

I typically do 1/48th for aircraft so this was tiny.A tough scratch build in that scale....

Seems there were so many "in the field" fabrications for the specializd gear you can pick the one you want to do and be correct. There are many types of starlight scopes and lamps, I decided on the shorter scope and a Sheridan tank light.

Looking for a good 50 cal in 1/48 to match to a scratch built mount.

Fitting to a ESCI UH-1D floor board now.

I'm comparing the ESCI main rotor and interior to the Italeri rotor and interior.

ESCI is on the bottom, Italeri on the top.

Neither main rotor is exactly right.

Been told they both have shortcomings. Interior of both needs work as well.

I like the exterior of the ESCI kit better.

Looking for suggestions from you guys that know the Huey and kit shortcomings,  - D model in particular

Here's a picture of the setup I'm trying to duplicate.

According to the guys I'm in contact with, the mini gun and scope on the specific aircraft I'm doing was on the starboard/right side, with the 50 cal on the port /left - or blind side.

Nice detail work on your search light and scope!   We shared a hanger with a Cav Troop and they had a Nighthawk bird but I never paid much attention to the set up much less took any pictures.  In your comparison picture of the Italeria and ESCI kits you have the main rotor blades mixed up.   The ESCI kit has the correct blades and the Italeria has the 212/N blades.  The trailing edges would have to be removed to shorten the cord for the D/H models.  Keep up the good work and sharing your build.

Yes...you are quite correct. I inadvertently mixed up the rotor blades, thanks for correcting that error.

I'll make note of it as I think the proper version for my build is the D version.

As I move through the build I'll post  more pictures. Sourced a 50 cal. in 1/48th ...that's next, plus interior & cockpit mods.

Cobra Company has a minigun set on the way so I'll be working that with a scratchbuild mount....field fabricated version.

Fantastic work on that scratch built light and scope!!! Top notch. Please keep updating as Nighthawks, Firefly's and Lightning Bugs are my favorite topic. I'm working a reference about this area.

I will do that.

I'm switching my build time between this nighthwk UH-1D.  and my scratchbuild project, a 1/48th UH-23 Hiller Raven.

The six cylinder Lycoming engine from scratch is a challenge.

Did some work on the cockpit, instrument panel,  and seats as well.

I think I'll wait on Kitty Hawk's new 1/35 UH-1D/H!

I think I'll wait on Kitty Hawk's new 1/35 UH-1D/H!

Unfortunately, they have shifted gears and it will now be in 1/48.  New box art.

Maybe later they say, for a 1/35 Huey.  Check here to read up on it: http://www.arcforums.com/forums/air/index.php?/topic/294463-kitty-hawk-135th-scale-huey/&page=10

That's really disappointing. I was really looking forward to a 1:35 release. Any ideas as to whether or not KH is still planning on giving us a 1:35 Cobra?

It doesn't look like it any time soon.  For now they say they will focus on 1/48 and possibly revisit 1/35 at a later date.

Harry Cooper will be estatic!  That is his bird he crewed on the box art.   174th AHC Dolphin "543", "When you are out of Schlitz you are out of beer!" across the top of panel and "This fish swims in booze." left bottom. The art work was painted by Ben Kennedy in 1968.

Mel,

You might notice they left the pitot from the bird on the box art.  Otherwise it looks great.  Floyd and I are working hard to see that this kit is the most accurate Huey in any scale.

Ray,

If they had the nose mounted pitot it would make the box art incorrect since "Schlitz" was a UH-1H 67-17543!   I figured they might include the extra antenna's and both pitot tubes in the kit to rebox it as a Hotel!   Best of luck holding "bean counters" and "engineers" to authenticity!  I heard the guys that collaborated with MRC/Academy lost the battle over some items!  Pylon assembly is a Bravo in their Charlie model series!
