Looking for an easy to build kit
Posted by JayF on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 1:20 PM

Hello

All this talk about helicopters makes me want to build one !

So I'm looking to get an easy kit, something very newbie friendly. I have some experience building 1/72 scale aircrafts and a few 1/35 vehicles.

Like I said in an another post, my first (and last) copter I ever built was the Revell 1/48 Huey Hog. I believe it was my first or second model I built in my life, and it was a nightmare to do (I don't know why I didn't quit the hobby then and there). Anyway ...

While I like the Blackhawk, it can be anything that is fun and cool to make (like another UH-1C ...)

any suggestion ?

Any particular scale or era? There are a lot of very good helicopter kits available. There are cheap old Revell-Monogram ones like the AH-1 and AH-64 that are quick builds.

Thanks for your quick answer, Rob

I would like something bigger than 1/72. 1/48 would be a perfect scale.

Also, anything vietnam-era or modern could be good. Like I said, I like the Blackhawk, but I also saw on the Revell web site the 2 gunships you suggested. They look real nice.

In the same scale and same manufacturer, what about the Russian Mil-24 Hind ?

Revell-Monogram does make a decent Hind in 1/48 scale. Like the Cobra and Apache, these kits were from Monogram before their merger with Revell. I don't know the accuracy of the helicopter or anything else about it though.

The 80s era Monogram 1/48 scale helicopters are decent builds. Back then Monogram ruled the 1/48 scale aircraft genre.

My suggestion would be the Revell/Monogram AH-1F kit.  It is both the most accurate AH-1F OOB on the market and one of the cheapest 1/48 kits around (new for less than $16).  Another option would be the Hobby Boss 1/48 UH-1C.  While it is any EASY build, it lacks quite a bit in accuracy.  It does look like a Huey though.  Personally, I'd go for the Cobra.  Just my 2 cents.
