Securing rotors; pros and cons
Posted by Spitfire on Sunday, May 18, 2014 10:49 AM

I'm presently working on my first helicopter model (AH64 Apache) and am at the stage where you add the main rotor.  I've read some comments here by some who have said they never secure rotors in case they ever want to take them out for any reason.  Which seems like a good idea.  So I'm trying to decide knowing that once I glue the fuselage I'm stuck with the decision.

So was just wondering if someone wouldn't mind giving me a quick pros and cons on this to see if I might be missing something.

Specifically what I'm talking about is gluing that plastic nut type thing to keep the rotors from being lifted out.

I never secure the rotors.  I am in the military and move often.  The removal of the rotors allows them to be more easily packed for moving, or to take them to a show.  It also keeps the rotors from being damaged by allowing them to be packed flat, as opposed to sticking off the top and being snapped off when moving or handling the helo.

Gluing the rotor to the model:

Pros- Rotor will always be attached to the model.

Cons- rotor will always be attached to the model!

As Gino says, it is really convenient to be able to remove rotors for transport.  Also, I can see where is you wanted to clean your model, being able to remove the rotors would help when handling it as well.  I will say that I sometimes glue tail rotors as they have a habit of falling off with the slightest touch.

What they ^ said.

Plus also you could use neodymium magnets (rare earth magnets) to secure the rotors, I've done that on two helo's now for tail rotors (using 1mmx2mm dia magnets), although I could have perhaps been a bit more careful in my positioning of the magnets, my Jolly Greens tail rotor sits at an odd angle if you don't have one blade pointing the right way...

You could probably do the same on main rotors if needed but all the helo's I've built so far have pegs to put the main rotors onto so they spin but aren't actually attached.
