Just thought I'd stir up the pot. . .
Is it a chopper or a helo?

Let's see what kind of response we can get to this ...
I've noted that if you're Air Force ... Navy ...Coast Guard .. or Marine ... it's likely a Helo. I've not noted many Army people calling them that. Usually helicopter ... or aircraft. Only people I've noted calling them 'choppers' are non-aviators or civilians.
Sounds like something for Jon's thesis....

I say Chopper you say helicopter....lets call the whole thing off! Tongue [:P]

Helo's is what you hear the most around shows and on the field.

You know your talking to a pro when they refer to a Chinook as a HOOK.

Straighten up and fly right.....

I think that every 'helo' (i was a Marine) has their own names that are only shared within that community.......I can think of a very fond name we had for the CH-53E's that can't be repeated on this forum, 46's were just Phrogs, and of course anything else was just a skid!!!Tongue [:P]Wink [;)]

Pete or Pedro? HH-43 I believe. They are actually helicopters! Probably shortened to Helio"s and Choppers just like the Infantry became "Grunts"! Saves sylables and breath!

Clear Left!

This little diddy is PERFECT for this PETE thread!

I can feel the life runnin' out of me workin' here at Pete's
Two years ago it was just the thing
Workin' cars part time every week

I met 'em both at a drag race
They both dressed pretty snappy that day
Pete's wife Peg put the make on me
While Pete just looked the other way
Now no one can say what your future will hold
Or what your life will have in store

We went home that night
Pete passed out on the couch
And then Peg pulled me down on the floor
Well, I know she knew what she was doing
Forbidden fruit, but what the hell, I bit
That's all it took, my fate was sealed
That night the flame was lit

And every night when the lights go out
Pete drinks his booze and then he passes out
And I hear a footstep outside my door
And then I remember what I started working here for......

Theres more but you git the idea.

Hmmm.... Heard a lot of Army Aviators callin em Airplanes or sleds. I agree with Paul, only civilians call em choppers from what I've heard. Helo is an acceptible term from what i know. Flying eggbeater works too... Wink [;)]

GRUNT- Ground Reinforcement Unit, Not Trained
Personally, I call them helicopters unless refering to a specific helicopter. I haven't noticed what my fellow cadets and cadre call them but I'll pay more attention and get back to you on this. My Army ROTC unit has an Air Assualt mission coming up 1 Apr. so we'll see.

Adrake,

You guys sending anyone to the All-Army Small Arms Championships at Benning? We'll be shooting all week next week. Should be one heck of a spring break!

*sigh*
Pete isn't here. I thought for sure we could flush him out with the helo/chopper thing, he usually goes ballastic at the mere mention of the word "HELO."Evil [}:)]
I haven't heard from him in a while and thought I could get him up to a hover, but alas he refuses to rise to the bait.

Cobrahistorian,
The Air Assualt mission is an annual thing for us. The Is, IIs, and IIIs load up on a couple Blackhawk helicopters from a local Guards MEDEVAC unit and fly to a guards camp and run through some STX lanes. We don't have any Air Assualt slots, but we do have 3 Airborne and 2 Robin Sage slots for our IIs. I was lucky enough to snag an Airborne slot this summer. We don't have a shooting team so we aren't going to Fort Benning next week.
