Looking for OH-6

 I don't know which model it is ( aircraft ). It's a REVELL kit . I did NOT have any fit or finish issues with the one from Magnum P.I.   T.B.

 I just got back from Hobby Lobby and found two . A 1/72 army " Loach " and a 1/48 scale Police " Loach " with Motorcycle  .The police version says 500-D on the box . I hope this helps .T.B. 

 

Thanks. I just got word from a place that the Dragon one is back in stock. I also heard of folks saying they had problems to overcome with the build. I have seen some excellent builds of this but they are far beyond my scope or patience. I have tried to find some pics of this built basically out of the box

Yep that would be a nice little flare by that Loach crew in their OH-6A coming in over Yellow smoke. Hughes really was brilliant in this design. You dont need much 'touch' on the controls with these. As one pilot told me you just point your head in that direction and off you go!

One of those weird memory moments: I dealt with rotor signatures for a bit with PEO AVN and RDECOM. The sound signature on the OH-6 is just as unique as the Huey, Chinook, Kiowa, or Blackhawk. You know it when it you hear it.

There is a reason the Special People continue to fly them today.

The Loaches the National Guard were handed down in the 80s made things feel like Vietnam Air Cav CONUS style. Most of the Guard pilots back then had been in Vietnam so there was also a certain swagger to it all. Time and place.

Thanks for that extra info. I'll have a look again to see what's out there. My skills are pretty much limited to how well it goes together out of the box. I admire some of these builds. Here's the CO off to a meeting in 70. OH-6A?

Here is a link within the group to a completed Tamiya 1/48 OH-6 build. You can see it's a fairly basic vintage kit from 1972 that leaves lots of room for improvement depending on what you're going for. Because it's a 'vintage kit' though sellers will think they are sitting on a gold mine. Expect to pay for their hubris.

If you're going to pay that type of price though get the Dragon OH-6A in 1/35 scale. It's worth it or the rebox of it. Personally I cant do 1/72 anymore. All those years of cordite in my eyes courtesy of Uncle Sam.

Del Vecchio did a nice build of one in this group.

Here's a real deal Cherry OH-6A in Vietnam from my 35mm slide collection. Photographer and unit are sadly unknown.

There is also the old Revell 1/32 OH-6A kit that can easily be found online for sale.

That's the Loach I got from Wal-Mart a long while back. Italeri released a bunch of 1/72 scale helicopters in the mid 90s like several versions of the OH-6/AH-6, Hueys, OH-58, and the Comanche. Most of the helicopters came in Vietnam and modern era version. They are pretty good little kits and were not a lot of money back then.

In 1:72 there are three models available - Italeri, AZ Model (those are related) plus another one from a company called Profiline - this one had the fuselage made entirely from clear plastic - should help with filling that canopy seam... - or maybe not?

I've built the 3 I mentioned (x3 for the Cobra). Wish they would have done a D or H Huey. I love the longer fuselage...it looks way more "right" than the short ones. Plus, Dad flew the H.

Academy/MRC did/does 1/35 models of the others you listed (and a very nice UH-1C), but not the OH-6 in 1/35.

In 1/48, the Academy one isn't terrible (same kit boxed as the MD-500...I believe). Only issue I recall with it is the door does not want to be closed...a bit of trimming will do the trick though.

Italeri also reboxed the Dragon one in 1/35 with different decals.  This version is very nice and well detailed.  Also, if you are interested, CMK makes resin/PE sets for the interior, exterior, and engine compartment for the 1/35 version.  There is also an Eduard PE set for them.
