USMC AH-1Z NOT a sharkmouth
Posted by TheMongoose on Sunday, November 22, 2020 7:16 PM

I haven't built a helicopter since I was a kid! This could be ugly. From the sound of it this Academy 1/35 kit should come with a cheat code - good engineering, a quality kit. The plastic sure looks beautiful.

Excited about doing a Marine Zulu on the USS Boxer, Amphibious Ready Group. There's a couple BuNu on the Marine Skid Zulu set. The Evil Eyes Pirate appeals to me as i played Red Beard the pirate at campouts for the Cub Scouts when my kids were growing up :-)

I've really been trying not to spend any extra money on my builds but this one needs the full motion video mod and without the rotor fold not sure where it would fit so it may be time to spend a little on upgrades. What are the odds I won't use purchasing 1 upgrade to justify the full metal jacket?

Working on this over in the 50 Shades of Grey GB. Check out my progress there and I'll post up finished pics here for those who don't always check through all the GB's.

More of the basics done today. I put a wash on the cockpit and finally got the two fuselage halves together. Is it called a fuselage on a helicopter? Just a little perfect plastic putty needed in a few spots. I’ve got wiring and background “stuff” behind all the screens. I managed to make all of them open using the PE from the kit and some fine 60mesh screen i bought earlier this year for my aircraft carrier build.

The weeks been busy and i just got a few minutes tonight to do a little decalling. Thought I’d at least throw a teaser out for what will be this weekends work now.

A little microsol and off to bed.

I’m doing YP 41 from HMLA 267 off the Boxer. This one’s on the Marine Skid Zulu’s Flying Leathernecks Sheet. I found info on the black aces and skulls. I can’t find anything on the red skeleton on the ripped black flag yet. Does anyone have a link to more info on this insignia?

The red skeleton is the pirate flag of one Edward Low, active from 1721 to 1724.  It's a Jolly Roger.

thanks! That was a good read. I'd never heard of him but sounds like he was 1 of a couple greats along with black beard.

Thanks HeavyArty!

Coming down the homestretch with my viper. I'm working on the base for it now. Here's a couple pics of the mock up. VMM-163 is deployed off the USS Boxer amphibious assault ship So i grabbed a few pics to come up with the flight deck layout.

She is all done and looking like she threw down some ordnance!

I used the Flying Leathernecks decals, so many to choose from. I decided on the Red Skeleton Jolly Roger of VMM-163. I picked up the Werner Wings decal for all the stencils. And of course you have to use some of the kit decals as well. I will say they go on swell and were thin and easy to apply. I ended up buying Eduard seatbelts to really match everything else done in the cockpit. Since i was spending money on shipping why not get more right, so i picked up DefModels 20mm gun barrels as well :-) And with my jolly roger choice I needed some full motion video which I got from Shapeways.

The cockpit additions are all scratch built. My favorite add is the tiny wound cable behind the gunner’s seat. Lot’s to see in this one. All the plastic behind the PE vents was cut away and wiring and components were added. Hard to see with my camera skills tho but I did my best to show something ;-)  The 4 sensors(i assume) on the corners are hand painted and filled with testors window maker to try and simulate the glass. The pitot is brass tubing bent and sanded to shape. The seal where the stub wing meets the fuselage was painted and then coated with mask solution so upon final painting it could be uncovered for a little added detail. And lastly some inspiration from a local buddy of mine, goes by Bradley25mm over on the IPMS forum - fine detailing the tail rotor gear assembly with wiring, sensors, and wire clips. His looks awesome and he gave me lots of pointers on this build.

Paint was my usual mix with 1 addition this time. Thanks to Starfighter(LSP) for the recommendation on color choices for the upper bluish gray on these birds. I ended up with Mission Models as they were available locally. Primer is Citadel Chaos Black (satin). Color coats are Mission Model and MCW acrylic lacquer. Cockpit is all done in Vallejo colors. Weathering is all Flory Models washes. And the final flat clear is MCW to close it out.

I’ve been looking forward to this model for some time and am excited to show these pics. Once I have the base done she’ll make one final pass just to show her profile.

TheMongoose, that's sweet lookin'! My plan is to build all the USMC AH-1s in 1/48, and I have the KH Zulu waiting its turn. Truth is, it's waiting until my skills are up to par. I still have the T and W in line ahead of the Z. Hopefully by the time I'm ready to build it, I can build it up as well as you. I love the worn operational look. Great job!

Holy cow!  That is freakin' AWESOME Mongoose!  If you didn't have it sitting on your bench, I'd swear it was the real thing.  Nice paint work and weathering!

Thanks for stopping in guys and dropping those nice comments!

I'm nearly done with the base now. It's good enough to preview at this point. I just have to finish the rail on the side of the ship and it'll be ready to set up.

Hey Gang, check out all my weathering experiences in this months IPMS Journal. I was stoked to hear they were interested in printing it but stunned to see it on the cover. This was such a fun and exciting build, PLUS I’m such a Marine addict!
