MH-53 Pavelow III Models?
Posted by roguemodel on Thursday, April 15, 2004 8:45 AM
Hi, does anyone know of a kit out in 1/72 or 1/48 of the Pavelow? I have the Revell kit of the MH-53 in 1/48 and would convert it but I figure that somebody has to be planning to issue this kit. Thanks, Mike

Mike.
I don't know of a kit at the present, but, if you'll go to www.cobracompany.com you will find a conversion set for the kit that you have to make it a PAVELOW III.

I recently got the old CH-53 in 1/48 by Revell and was looking to make a Pave Low, what's the word on Cobra Company's conversion kits? Though I'm torn, I might go with a USMC -53 to go with the new -46 that's coming out...

I have not personally used one yet. I have seen them and the appear to be of excellent quality.
There are a couple of members here who have used their product and have talked with the owner and swear by their stuff.

Italieri had a 1/72 Pave Low kit out a few years ago too.

I've built the 1/72 Pave Low, not a bad little kit, but it reminded me why I build in 1/48 and 1/35. Those are some small parts!

All I know is that I've been searching for this kit for a long time, ever since I stumbled across Cobra Company's website with the resin detail sets for a Pave Low. I got lucky and my father found one on ebay and sent it my way for Christmas this year. I believe it's the old Revell -53 kit, but I can't get you more details as I'm deployed and the kit is sitting at home in North Carolina gathering dust. Once I get back, I'll be happy to post some more info. As a matter of fact, I'll see if the wife can't send me some details, what do you want to know?

Heath.
The REVELL kit is not bad but pretty basic.
I haven't checked in awhile, but it was available from REVELL AG the last time I looked. Like I said, it has been awhile, though.
The one that I had from a few years back came with a jeep (appeared to be a CJ5), a 105 howitzer and decals for a UN bird (which went by the wayside, as I am NOT a big fan of the UN!!!}. You can build it with the loading ramp opened or closed. But, if you build it open be prepared to do a lot of scratch building. They also offered it at one time with markings of a bird used for SAR missions in Vietnam.
As I said, it is pretty basic but, not that bad of a kit as it is the only 1/48 kit in town.
They show up on Evilbay every-once-in-awhile. I am looking for another, myself

Now that you mention it, I think the kit I have is the SAR version. Vietnam Rescue, or something like that is on the box art. Still, its one kit that I've been searching for, and it will look great sitting next to my -46 once I get my hands on that one. Now on to the search for the elusive Little Bird...

As far as I know, the old Revell kit is the only one available in 1/48, and it's of a CH-53D. I have two kits, the second being the latest re-release from Revell/Germany. It shows a -53D in German Army markings and includes much more accurate aux tanks and sponsons (batwings for us USMC types).

I have yet to get my hands on the Pave Low conversion from Cobra Company, but I as well hear that it's a great set.

On a somewhat related topic... did anyone catch the ad in the back of the latest Fine Scale issue... showing a 1/24 Trumpeter CH-46E for @ $35.99? I'm sure it was a typo, and meant to say the new Academy 1/48 version of the Phrog.

The Revell AG kit is of the CH-53 GS/G version. I'm doing the Air Force pavelow MH-53. Ever since I saw one in action at a demonstration at Offutt Air Force base I've been in love with it. It's a fearsome, awesome machine. The kits in Omaha are available at Hobbytown. Other wise they are available on the net from squadron.com or greatmodels.com. As a matter of fact for a town of 800,000 in the metro area the only place for model is hobbytown, and they don't carry much. I'm considering opening a hobby store here that would off every kit of every maker. I, personally like to go into a hobby store knowing that they have my kit. Hobbytown is also extremely slow in getting new releases in.

roguemodel,
HobbyTown's not the only place in Omaha to find a model. Hobby Lobby and Bel Aire are other good stores. Personally, I prefer Bel Aire, but I haven't been there since last December. Take my word for it, I live an hour away in Lincoln going to school there.

Okay, so which is the easier update the old Revell kit or the Revell AG kit? I think I might go out and get the Revell AG one, that way, I have a -53 in USMC colors, and a Pave Low III. Then I just have to turn my shelf into a parking ramp for all these big birds...

Ive built 3 of Italeri's 1/72 MH-53's and love them ,got 4 more in my to do pile because every now and then I realize my talent has improved and its time to build a better Pavelow. And in 1/72 it looks great next to my 1/72 AC-130H and MH-60G to complete my 1st SOG Airline from Hurlburt Field

*Drool!*

I want pics of every one of those you listed! [:0]

My father was stationed at Hurlburt Field for 10 years as an observer at the Air Ground Operations School. Before that, he was a navigator on AC 130's in the first SOG when they first got those birds. He completed115 combat missions over Laos in those gunships during 1969-70. His AC's tail number ended in -600; that was also the plane he was in when they were almost shot down on Good Friday 1969.

I want to recreate what you have in honor of my father's service. I'll need to know where to get the decals too!

Not nitpicking or anything but it's the 1st SOW (Special Operations Wing) at Hurlburt.

Thanks for the correction Salbondo. Its been several years since I was in that area (93)and instead of following in my fathers footsteps and becoming an AirForce Weenie :) I became a ground pounder instead. (man an I kicking myself now)

Duke Maddog. Heres a link to my models. not the greatest pics in the world but until I find a better way to post em Im kinda limited in my options. (and right now this does a good job at hiding my******poor modeling skills :)

The kit for the MH-53 is the Italeri kit and includes decals for Hurlburt. The AC-130 is the Airfix kit and also include decals for Hurlburt. cant remember about the MH-60 but can find out.

I believe the Italeria 1/72 scale model has been discontinued, and as far as I know there is no other maker of a Pave Low model in any other size.
BTW, the 1st SOW has been long gone and was renamed the 16th SOW on 1 Oct 93. I was a crew chief on the MH-53 Pave Low from 92'-95', and from 95' I have been flying on it as a Flight Engineer. If there is anything I can do to help, please let me know.

Well, PaveFE, once I start the build for my -53, I know where to go for all those questions that are going to pop up. Welcome aboard!

PaveFE if you have any pics please share... I need detail pics of the 53E especialy the wheel wells, landing gears, and something that show color in the rear area. If you were at Hurlburt I could also use the same kind of pics for the AC-130's if you have any.
Many thanks in advance

I will be glad to help anyone out. You can go to a website I built for our community at
http://www.mh-53pavelow.com. I have alot of pics, but I also know of some websites that have good shots for model building. I'll track down the links and post them here.

Those pics are awesome Awood! Thanks for the links! Now I have to find After-market decals for my AC130 that's hanging on my ceiling too. I painted mine in SE Asia camo with black undersurface like one of the ones my old man flew in during Vietnam. The other one was an all-dark grey plane tail number 600. That was the one that he was in when it almost got shot down on Good Friday 1969. They landed on one engine at Ubon, with three casualties. Fortunately, my old man was not one of them.

Nice website! I've been there before looking for Pave Pig shots. That new site looks even better.

Remember, guys, that NightFlight models are working on a resin/PE model range of the -53 in 1/35 scale! Now that's a model worth waiting for!
Go to their website and have a look at the shots of the pre-production bits and pieces. They are also to be marketing figures in 1/35 and 1/48 for these birds.
The production has slowed somewhat due to a lack of promised technical info and photos, but hang in there ...... it'll be worth the wait!

I heard that NightFlight was doing this a year or more ago and sent them a couple of e-mail asking for any detaisl, but go no replies. I've given up hope on them. I haven't been to their site recently, have they posted a tenative delivery date yet? I'd really love to have one (or two) in 1/35 scale. I'll have to look up their address again.

Sorry folks, don't know why this message posted twice, deleted the 2nd post.

paraclete1,

send me an e-mail again and I will try and answer your questions as best as I can.

It will depend on what kind of details you would like to know. As for pictures, I will only show shots of the final prototype and the final kit. The CAD renderings are generally regarded as useless by most modellers. Due to the fact that all construction work is done with a CAD software, I have nothing else to show.

BTW, I am still doing more researching than constructing on all of the projects.

Sorry to hear you gave up hope on NightFlight, but I am doing my best to please you and the rest of the modellers.

Regards
