Pave Low III help
Posted by adrake2 on Friday, July 2, 2004 10:24 PM
I've got some questions for our resident MH-53J experts here.

1. Is the upper section of the tail ramp doors removed and never carried? The Cutting Edge Modelworks Weapons Set instructions said something like this.
2. Describe the Flight Engineer's seat. The seat wasn't included in the conversion sets so I have to scratchbuild one.
3. What kind of personal equipment is carried and where on the helicopter is it carried?
4. Where are the electronic control boxes for the miniguns located? The Cutting Edge instructions place them aft of the ammo bins, but I don't believe that where they are on the real aircraft.
5. Was the MH-53J Pave Low III used to support Army Special Operations in Afghanistan, or was the MH-53M Pave Low IV used instead?
6. If so, how were they typically configured?

I'd like to model a Pave Low III that was used to infiltrate a US Army Special Forces A-Team into Afghanistan on 19 October 2001 or one that was used to extract Army Rangers who parachuted onto an airstrip south of Kandahar on the same night.

Hi, the pavelow's back doors are gone, there are two wind flaps back there and the loading ramp. Go to www.mh-53pavelow.com they have fantastic pics of the pavelow, inside and out. Cobracompany.com has a great conversion set for the Revell 1/48 kit. Otherwise, the ship is still much of a mystery.

Thanks roguemodel. I've already checked out the website (great vids by the way) and it's a good reference source. Two AFSOC guys have replied to me by email (one's a flight engineer and the other's a gunner). Thanks for the replies if your reading this, it really helped.Bow [bow]

I don't know if you still need help here, but after a few minutes of searching again, I was able to locate a web site that helped me with the interior of the Pave Low. Hope this helps. Note that one of the cockpit photos shows the FE's seat with the back down.

I'd like to see any photos you receive from others or you model when you complete it. Good Luck

oops, forgot to add that this site shows a picture where you can see the FE's seat folded up into the stowed position.
