Canada just got new Helo's!
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, July 23, 2004 3:20 PM
I was readn' the news today and I read that our Government purchased 28 H-92's, for $3 billion dollars. Looks like Academy will have to do a 1/35th scale issue of this chopper. It is going to replace the Sea Kings that we have (the one's that haven't crashed by the time you read this ....Big Smile [:D]Big Smile [:D][:0][:0]) The only problem I could see was that there is no military version of this helo (unless you look at the MH-60's) and that at the time of this writing, none exist. Check out Sikorsky's website for pictures.!

I am hoping to reap the benifits of the S-92 going into military service. Much of the technology in this airframe is transferable to the 60

I read that the S92 has pretty much come last in every competition it has run for.
I wonder why you guys are buying 2 helicopters in the same weight class, the Cormorant having just been delivered.
Maybee something to do with the RAH66 project CANX and a price they couldnt refuse !

Remember folks ..... we've been tryin' for 20 years to get these choppers. Each successive Government that comes along CANCELS the purchase order, and starts again. The company that makes the EH-101got millions of dollars for the first CANCELED contract. Politics plain and simple. I makes modeling Canadian Choppers hard to do, as you never know what one's we have these days.....

It's about damn time. And you're right, no military version of this helicopter exists, yet. I guess we'll be the first.

As I understand it, its because the cancellation penalty charges imposed by Eurocopter who make the EH-101, made it impossible for Canada to buy both the Ship borne one to replace the Sea King and the stripped down one to replace the CH-113 Labradors in the SAR role. Replacement of the Labradors was slightly more important and we could afford the stripped down Cormorant, replacement of the Sea Kings would have to fall to a different bird.

They are being marketed to several countries. Portugal, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Oman and Ireland. Had to look this one up and see what I could come up with.

Thats a cool looking bird.

Why two different types of helicopters? Simple: Politics.

The current party was elected by promising not to purchase the EH-101 helicopters, which, according to them, we did not need. So they cancelled everything, including terminating companies that were poised to produce many parts (or was it final assembly? Can't remember) right here in Canada. But it was quite late in cancelling, so they had to pay tremendous termination fees (several hundreds of millions).

But, despite their wishful thinking, Labradors and Sea King were still old and falling from the sky. So they replaced the labrador with the Cormorant - easier to pass, since it's for rescue ops.

But the Sea King still need to be replaced, and they couldn't well buy logically and use the same airframe, but look like fools. So they chose to save face and buy something else - even though it will need a whole different infrastructure to support. And it will cost just as much (if not more) than the original contract, minus the parts made in Canada.

Politicians, don't you just love them? (Don't answer, I can guess ;))

kinda funny imo, the eh-101 was was designed as a "SKR" (sea king replacement).

i was looking at the pics of the civilian S-92s, oviously there will be no windows on the side, but will there be a side cargo door? the winglets/fuel tanks (what ever they are) seem to be in the way. the cargo door on the sea king has a winch and on some a MG. maybe it will be on the back. and where will the anti submarine torpedoes be put?

and yes butchy, canada needs tanks, better than our current leopard 1s.

You can strike Ireland from the list.
We were supposed to be the first military customer until an investigation into the contract was carried out , ' certain irregularities ' were discovered and the order was shot in the head ,never to be spoken of again.
If the 92 is so great , how come the yanks have postponed the announcement of the US101/S92 competition until AFTER the presidential election?
A sikorsky loss wouldnt go down well in CT and Merlin is the preferred option.
Lockheed Martin may be the bidder - but it is a foreign product and would have to be wanted VERY badly to get through the protectionist US military procurement system.
Canada - watch out, just because its shiny and new, doesnt mean its the best option.
I am sure that if you were serious about re instating the order for the 50 101's, W/A would be more than delighted to negotiate around the penalty payment , as a large Canadian order would be very high profile indeed.
The training and logistics costs of 2 similar aircraft within an organisation the size of Canada's armed forces should be prohibitive.
The 101 is already in service, but the 92 now has to go through a lengthy in-service acceptance period with no proven track record, the old Sea Kings aren't gone yet!

As far as new tanks are concerned, Britain won't have any after this year , when the announced cuts come into effect, so put in a bid for some Challenger II's and get some REAL tanks.
The way things are going , the Kiwi's will have a more potent defence force than the UK, all so that Phony Tony can try to buy the next general election with other people's lives.
Remember folks, its party politics first , Armed Forces last!

At least we are getting them new unlike our subs(ex-british, cannot submerge) and leopard 1s. Challenger 2s, leopard 2s, abrams, i don't care as long as they can take on what most countries we fight have. when we were in kosovo we sent our leos, they were out gunned and out armoured compared to the enemies T-72s!!!, lucky they did not have to see action. i read somewhere that canada was going to buy bran new leopard 2s when germany offered a great deal on leopard 1s cause they were upgrading to leo 2s and need some extra funding, so canada cheaped out and got the leopard 1s.

this should probaly be in the armour section so i will stop my ranting about canadain tanks. (i could proably go on for hours..........)Wink [;)]

About freakin' time.....the Canadian Navy was becoming more afraid of their own shipboard SeaKings than they were of their high-seas adversaries.......because the old SeaKings we have keep falling from the sky onto the aft of our new Frigates.......
