Bilked again!!
Posted by oldhooker on Saturday, July 24, 2004 11:38 AM
Yesterday, I picked up a kit I've been looking at for a while, the Heller 1/50 OH-58 Kiowa, # 80482...... See photo of box:

As you can see, the picture on the front of the box shows an OH-58C (with the flat window panels and top mounted exhaust).... well, when I opened the box after returning home, to my dismay, the kit within is that of an OH-58A with the standard "bubble" window and civilian interior!!! Disapprove [V] Also, the box art shows an exposed tail rotor shaft (the C Models had a shroud.... should have been a tip-off).... the kit has the shroud in place, and even raised civilian paint lines along the sides of the fuselage!!!!!????? The air intakes are that of an A model, the engine cover is that of an A model..... a CIVILIAN A model!!!

I had one of the old Fujimi OH-58's, that I scratched-built the flat window panels on (hadn't finished it yet though), but after finding this kit, I thought I could get a jump ahead and have a production C model.... wrong!!!

Bilked again.....

Geez Frank, that sucks. Talk about a let down. I know one thing- we need a 1/48th scale OH-58D Kiowa Warrior! Why this chopper has been overlooked in quarter scale is almost criminal.

While on the subject of the OH-58, how is the 1/48th Italeri Alpha model? My LHS a couple in stock, I would like to get one and do a Vietnam War-era Kiowa.

Alby,

If the Italeri OH-58A is a reboxed ESCI kit, then its pretty good. I built an old one a few months ago just for kicks (thanks Snakedriver!) and it had really nice engraved panels and went together well. Interior detail was minimal, but still, with some work it did well. I built a driveshaft shroud for it, since it had the exposed driveshaft and I tried the flat windscreen as well. Took a pair of Stingers from a 48th Apache and put them on ATAS mounts on the sides of it. Of course... I was 90% done.... and then the cat......

Needs a new rotor now. Sad [:(] But it is a good kit!

Just the reason not to have a cat. I stick to dogs.

Ah, the four-legged SAM. Furball variant. Had one take out my Horsa Glider at the paint stage. Angry [:(!] The little b*stard is lucky he didn't end up like this guy-Dead [xx(]

Thanks for the info on the Italeri Kiowa, I'll be picking one up next time I get to the hobby shop.

Cheers,
