Where can I find a 1/72nd OH-58D Kiowa
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, April 25, 2003 7:03 PM
Since watching the coverage of Iraqi Freedom on CNN I've been itching to build a 1/72 OH-58D, but I can't seem to find a kit. I know that Italeri once offered this model, but it seems to be out of production. Any idea where I could get a hold of one? I want to stick to 1/72.

Your right about the Italeri kit being OOP(Kit # 185). If I'm not mistaken DML/Dragon did one in 1/35th. I know you want to stick to 1/72 but if worse comes to worse know what I mean.
Just for the hellva it I asked Ron from my local hobby shop to order one cause it is still shown in his book even thou it is discontinued.
Heres my e-mail Falcon42177@yahoo.com or give me yours so I can keep you posted K..!!

I think it was Matchbox that made one a few years back. It was tiny.

Since I told you that I had Ron order me one eventhough its OOP, I still went back to Ace and checked.
Guess what, he has only one Italerri 1/72nd Kiowa left in captivity. The only thing is its a OH-58A kit # 2624.
I am sure there are a few differences between the Alpha and Delta models but nothing a modeler cant change.
It runs about $20 and I also put it off to the side since you were looking for one. If you are interested in the kit let me know or we could work something out K..!!

Italeri made two different Kiowa Warriors, one an OH-58D and the other an AH-58D. The basic airframe is the same, only the weapons stations on the kit differ. I believe I may have one or both and will look for them tomorrow.

If you saw an OH-58A and OH-58D sitting next to one another, the differences are major. Although they look alike, they are not. Sort of like comparing an Army AH-1S Cobra to a USMC AH-1T, both look alike and are only one letter apart, but there are major differences.

I checked my local store and they have the OH-58D for $3.99 and the AH-58D or $8.99, don't ask me why the difference for identical kits. I checked my stash and I must have traded off my 58D's. I still have an OH-58A though.

BTW the OH-58A is a Vietnam War era helicopter. It was also used throughout the 1970s and 80s.

The first OH-58As arrived in-country in 1969 and began training as part of the 5th Avn Det at Vung Tau. They began arriving with frontline units shortly thereafter. Although they never reached the numbers of the OH-6, the 58s did make a significant scouting contribution in the later years of the war. Its pretty cool that 30+ years later, we're still operating both the H-6 and H-58 in modernized variants!
