RAF Chinook HC.1 night scheme advice needed

Hello gents,

Seeking suggestions on how to replicate this paint scheme;

It is the paint scheme used on RAF Chinooks for night SAS operations from Operation Desert Storm. What method do you think would best replicate the mottling; airbrushing it, or hand painting with a small brush w/ eradic strokes? I'm starting the prelims on Airfix's 1/72nd CH-47 Chinook HC.1 so it will be a while before I get to the painting stage. As always, thanks for any info or advice.

I originally thought airbrush but after looking again, I would probably use the good ol' fashioned paint brush.

I think you could accomplish it with an airbrush. Low pressure and thinned paint should do the trick. Not to mention a steady hand and a whole lot of patience.

Albert,
I am also doing this version but using the Italeri kit (also thought about it in 1/144 but haven't gone there yet). I am actually looking at art markers from the craft stores. Think it will be easier to control than a brush. Otherwise, I will use a brush like they did on the real choppers.
Good luck and post pics. I would love some inspiration.

I've never been much for airbrushing, kind of a necessary evil to me at least. But in this case, I think the airbrush would be the easiest way to do it. Maybe try painting with your eyes closed... Blindfold [X-)]

Thanks for the suggestions thus far. I'll definitely play with both techniques before committing them to the actual model. Either way, I have my work cut out.

Yep, you can say that again. But it's one of the my favorite paint schemes for the Chinook that I've ever seen. Good luck, Alby.
