Kelly,
I suppose it would depend on the local SAR scene and commanders decision as to the tanks.
Also I was speaking from the past. . .mid 90's, as much as I hate to admit it time marches on. Training was a big part of the flight time back then, and the hoist training went easier without the tank in place. Now that the stations are up to snuff the tanks are back on. . .thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it!!

I have to agree with Dragonfire regarding the Italeri being "Navelized" (I like that term). I think the Cobra HH-60 set is actually based on an Academy kit. Cobra's own Seahawk kit was designed from an Academy if I'm not mistaken. Anyway the Italeri would be the way to go. Ther's still some modifications to be done if you choose to use the Cobra kit. Like, to the pilots doors and the cockpit floorboard (if both doors are to be displayed open. Also, getting the overhead section to fit right will be a challenge, and get the instrument panel at the correct slant or the windscreen won't fit right. It can be made into a fine looking replica inside and out. Pete Brown

I'd get an Italeri kit, because it depicts a "Navalized" version of the H-60. This will be easier for you to convert vice using the Academy kit.

Okay, so here's another question...the Cobra conversion kit is designed for the Italeri model. Is there that much difference between the Academy and Italeri kits? I also have the Revell version, but I *know* that's not gonna be that good (building that one as a regular Army bird). Would the conversion work on the Academy kit, and how much detail difference is there between these two kits?

Thanks for the kind words Don. But I'll have to disagree about the starboard side fuel tanks. They are very common on Jayhawks. I'd say probably 50% of the times I've seen them the tanks are installed.

Just a note, the fuel tanks are removed from the right side for ease in hoisting operations.
Might still be on on in some situations, but for the most part are off.

The USCG decals you can get from Hawkeye Models Australia. They are HH-60J decals. I think it would be easier to convert the Italeri SH- 60 to an HH-60 rather than the Academy MH-60G. That's how I made mine. I used the Cobra Company HH-60 conversion set (which is fantastic) and a little scratch building. I also seperately orderd the Cobra photoetch set from their SH-60 kit The Eduard SH-60 photoetch set would be useful too. I am very satisfied with how my HH-60J Jayhawk turned out using these items. I air brushed Testers International Orange, but darkened it just slightly to match the orange decal color. The masking is a bit tricky, but if you follow your reseach photos, and do a good masking job, it will look great. Hope this information is helpful. Pete Brown

A 1/48 Jayhawk? That's what the market is missing!

Between the position of the tail wheel, the main cabin windows & doors and external fuel tanks, you might want to consider the Italieri 1/48 SH-60 as your staring point. I think the real Jayhawk is based off of Sikorsky's navalized SH-60 whereas the MH-60G at the end of the day is a heavily modified standard UH-60 airframe. Cobra Company even makes a Jayhawk conversion kit for the Italeri SH-60 http://www.cobracompany.com/48033.htm

I don't know about decals though. You might be able to co-opt some from a 1/48 Dolphin kit.

I'm looking to convert an Academy 1/48 MH-60G into a USCG HH-60J Jayhawk. Does anyone know of any after-market decal sets in 1/48 fo USCG markings?
