Apache painting advice.
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, September 16, 2004 4:33 AM
Hi guys - I'd appreciate your input on this,

I'm currently working on the Italerai 1/48 Apache Longbow and I'm approaching the painting stage. Now I'm a little undecided about how best to go about painting this beasty.

Im looking to paint this chopper in a fairly dark scheme, and I'm going with a Humbrol enamel dark green base, however what I want to do is create some nice subtle differences in textures and possible lighter shades on raised areas.

Here is my plan,

1 - dark green base - uniform coat.
2.- mix a slightly lighter shade and airbrush raised areas and corners
3 - black wash using artists oil paint
4 - very subtle drybrushed highlights of raised detail ie - rivets and sharp corners

Good plan? What would you do differently ?

Thanks

John

Sounds good to me. I'm using Model Master paints, but doing the same thing. MM's Helo Drab is right on for Apache color.

Cobra is right. Just use Model Master U.S. Army Helo Drab. It will definitely look great. Dark green just does not look right on an Apache. Then continue with the wash and drybrush. However if you do use your original plans please post your work so I can see if its a good technique.Smile [:)]

Thanks guys - sounds good

MM/Testor paints are hard to come by round here - anyone know what the equivalent Humbrol colour would be ?

This is my first posting to the forum. I can't help but ask if you are going for the pristine fresh off the line look or the weathered "combat service" look. I have seen quite a few army helo's and the CARC (chemical agent resistant coating) paint used on army helicopters fades gray as it ages and is exposed to sunlight. Granted the Longbow is a newer aircraft in Army use, it doesn't take long to fade. Adding a drop or 2 of a medium gray paint to lighten the MM us army helo drab would give a good realisitic "experienced" look to your aircraft. Hope this was of use to you.

Keep the spinnin' side up and the greasy side down.

Many thanks JR - that helps. As a UK Apache the weathering will be subtle, but I'm not one for pristine looking war machines :)

A shot of my progress so far - I've undercoated the work so far with primer, and scratchbuilt the rear of the fuselage with milliput to resemble the WAH-64D version.

The build looks really good so far. Scared me at first until I read the text that this was the primer coat in the photo. Your color coat should have just a hint of the gray in it. I'll try to get a few pics of some combat -64D's in Iraq for you. Keep us posted with the progress.

Privateer,

Would you be interested in having any of your in-country Apache photos published? I'm working on my second book for Osprey, dealing with the Apache in Afghanistan and Iraq. Email me off list at jonathan.a.bernstein@us.army.mil if you'd be interested.

Thanks very much!
