I'd suggest building the Hasegawa Apache. If you just want to build a good, cheap one, the Monogram 1/48 scale kit is a decent kit as well.

I have always loved the look of the UH-1s. They would be great to start out on helo models, the first modern helo. The old Esci 1/48 is supposed to be the best in that scale. For larger, MRC/Academy's 1/35 C versions are great. The old Revell 1/32 scale UH-1H is a great model, Panda's H model is also a good kit, not as good as the Revell, in my opinion.

Hi There,
If ya gonna build a helo it's gotta be the Blackhawk.
The MRC AH-60L is a great kit and also pretty cheap ( well thats if ya in Australia? ).
But it just depends on what ya like???

I'm working on a AH-1T SuperCobra in 1/35. But I've also got a Pave Hawk, UH-1N, a Whiskey Cobra in 1/35 waiting. I've got the old Revell OH-6 in 1/32. And then there's my 1/48 Super Stallion -53, CH-46 Bullfrog and a MV-22 Osprey. There are so many other choices out there, you're bound to find something that interests you to take a shot at building. Good luck and enjoy yourself.

You could try joing some of the GB's we got going.
There is the Huey GB and the Chinook GB.

I've always loved the Huey!Big Smile [:D] If you're going to start with an Apache, you could round out the Army Aviation collections with a CH-47, and the UH-60. Maybe, then throw in an AH-6 Little Bird. Just thoughts. Have fun!Smile [:)]

A HUEY. What? Thay make other helicopter's. No build whatever you feel like. By the way, which way were the Apache's flying, west (inland)? Spent time at Ft. Stewart. Sky was filled with HUEY's then.

Just don't go for the Italeri Apache - I'm building it at the moment and am getting increasingly frustrated with the ommitted details and general laziness of some of the kit design.

I'm trying to make the best of a bad job, but I'm discovering why I got this kit cheap...

Stick to Hasegawa ;)

QUOTE: whats the name of theapache has the odd thing above its rotors

That is an AH-64D Apache Longbow. The disk above the rotor is a milimeter wave radar antenna. It is able to identify targets and pass the targetting data to other AH-64Ds that do not have the radar mast. Then all the AH-64Ds in the Company, Plt, whatever, can attack the targets without exposing themselves. They can fire their latest generation fire-and-forget Hellfires from behind a hill or other cover, to keep them well protected. Here is more data on it.

Scroll about half way down to the AH-64D write-up.

Ga.Modeler,

If you're gonna build an Apache, build the Hasegawa 48th scale one! The 3rd ID now has 2 Apache battalions, the 1/3 "Vipers" and 3/3 "Tigersharks". I've got a few buddies in 3/3 (recently redesignated from the 1/229 Avn which was part of XVIII abn corps) who served in Afghanistan.

Seriously, though. If you're building an Apache, the Hase kit is the way to go. All of the others have serious inaccuracies. The only one that comes close is the Revell 1/32 kit, but in order to make it current, there's a LOT of scratchbuilding to do.

With a name like HeavyArty, you should build a heavy lifter. Like a CH-53E or a CH-47. They love to haul the Arty.

PS a 53E can lift way more than Chinnoooky

if i were you, I would build a 'Night Stalkers' chopper. Cuz they are soooo cool and the pilots are so very skilled. My favourate chopper would be the Little Bird(they can go EVERYWHERE!!) and the Blackhawk is pretty kick butt too.
Get your self one of them Dragon Little Bird kits!
