Building Revel/Monogram AH-1G (1/32)
Posted by Tailrotor on Friday, November 12, 2004 11:56 PM
I am wondering if any one else is building or has recently built the new Revel/Mongram AH-1G released in July.

I am building the kit now and am finding some significant irregularities and am wondering if they are unique to my kit or comon to the kit?

The fuselage halves in the area of the cockpit were not the same thickness. One was twice the size of the other. The canopy was also twice the size on each size but unfortunately on the opposite sides then the fuselage. The canopy was/is 3/32 shorter then the cockpit it is to fit into, requiring some tricky putty work. Plus, and this one really bothered me... the clear plastice nose peice does not fit the hole in the nose. It is not a minor mis-fit, [:0] the hole is so much larger then the peice that I would have to sand through the plastic (it is not thick enough) to shape the nose to the "nose peice". I just got done making a nose from epoxy putty that I will have to shape in the morning!

I built this kit many years ago (first release) and do not remember such problems. Plus I have one of the first release kits (not complete) that I have been comparing fit to and it is not the same. (I glued my Cobra Cockpit into the "new" kit before I discovered why things did not fit rightDisapprove [V]).

Any comments other then to tell me I should have done a better job test fittingBig Smile [:D]

John,

Firstly, welcome! I haven't built the latest issue of the kit, but the earlier ones I did build had some significant fit issues around the canopy. I basically shimmed it in with sheet plastic, filled with gap filling super glue and sanded flush in order to make it fit. Have you gotten the Cobra Company cockpit set for it? That REALLY adds to the model, which as I'm sure you're aware, has next to no cockpit detail.

That clear nose piece is a pain in the butt. The four Cobras I've built were all 1968 and later birds, so they had the solid nosepiece and relocated landing light. If you're building an early bird (66-67 issue) it is correct. Otherwise, I'd just fill behind it until you get the correct nose profile, sand it to shape and then paint over it.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the welcome.

One of the reasons I did not use the old fuselage parts was that I glued the Cobra Company cockpit in before I noticed the problems. That is one nice cockpit.

I flew these things in 69-70 and was going to paint the nose anyway. It was more the "I can't believe this" feeling that motivated my post, and a desire to see if others had the same problem. I came close to not posting because I had not done much in the way of test fittingBig Smile [:D]

My putty should be dry now so I think I will go shape a noseSmile [:)]

Thanks

Hello Tailrotor! and WELCOME!

I too built that kit a few years back using the Cobra Company set.
I also scratch built the gun control arm assy. That Cobra resin kit makes a big difference huh! I cheated though....I covered up the intakes & rocket pods ( dust control ) and called it IRON BUTTERFLY...couldn't help it...saw a pic of that snake in the Gunslingers Squadron book and loved it! ( listioning to my Iron butterfly and other 60's discs helps to stay in the right frame of mind always helps me build a better model.....I listion to 40's stuff when I build WWII aircraft kits as well.

Here is sum pics of my 1/32 snake: http://troysmodels.homestead.com/More_Models.html

What gets me is the over sized box they use now and the price! EEGADS!!....what a joke for a thirty something year old model kit!
When you can still get originals ( sometimes sealed ) on ebay for half the price!

Good luck on your snake and show some pics when your done!

I'm building the Protues sub used in that Fantastic Voyage flick right now but when I'm done I'm digging into my 1/48 MRC CH46 E Bull Phrog! OH YEAH!!!!!!!
Straighten up and fly right.....

Take your time and try everything first, whether it's resin or plastic. Yes, it's old and has it's issues but with some planning and research you can build an excellant AH-1G out of it.

This is exactly why I am not getting in any real big hurry. I've waited too long for this kit and I want it to be as right as can be.
In fact, I'm planning on doing at least 2 more. So, don't stop making the updates. Pleeeeeease? Approve [^] Tongue [:P] Wink [;)]
