AH1W question
Posted by HeavyArty on Monday, November 15, 2004 10:19 PM
Question: Do AH-1Ws ever mount external fuel tanks, if so, which hard point? I have the MRC/Academy AH-1W and some left over parts from a UH-60, the external fuel tanks. I can't find any pics of this set-up. Anyone ever seen this set-up?

Gino,

This quarter's International Air Power Review has a significant article on the Cobra that focuses primarily on the Whiskey. There are six shots of AH-1Ws carrying an external fuel tanks on the right inboard pylon. I would guess that both inboards were plumbed for fuel tanks, but if only carrying one, it would be on the right inboard.

I've just started my Whiskey Cobra (NTS) and was thinking about doing something along those lines as well. Still, there's something comforting about a load of nails and TOWs under one wing and HE and Hellfires under the other....

I agree. I already ahev one in TOW/Hellfire setup in ODS colors (its in my gallery). This will actually be my 3rd AH-1W. Just love the way it looks. Great looking helo. Thanks for the confirmation on the external tanks.

Hey Gino.
If you have Squadron's "AH-1 Cobra in Action", there is a picture on page 37 of an HMLA-269 bird with the long range tank on the outer pylon. The caption states that it is carrying a tank on BOTH outboard pylons.
There is also a painting on the back cover of a Whiskey with a tank on it's outboard pylon.
Also, the tank appears to be considerably smaller than the Blackhawk tank, although I'm sure it could be modified.

I believe its a 100 gallon tank, the UH-60 carries a 230 gallon AFMS/ERFS tank

Back to my original idea then. Can the tanks form the UH-60 kit be used on a AH-1W? Are they too big?

I'd say way too big, Gino. Plus the Cobra tank appears to be more blunt in shape.

AH-1W;

UH-60;

Yep! It almost looks like a 19 shot rocket launcher with the rounded covers on it.

Hey-
Just to confirm what some others have posted, the Whiskey Cobra is cleared for 77-gal tanks on both inboard and outboard stations. The 77 gallon tank is 10 feet long and 15 inches in diameter. The center section is a straight cylinder, with fairly blunt, almost round ends.

Hope this is helpful.

Thanks all for the advice and the measurments. I think I may modify the Academy tanks to fit.

Wow, that would be a waste of good UH60 tanks. You'll want those for something else. Plus, I don't think you could make them small enough. I think the Cobra tanks are pretty basic in shape. I would just get some tube stock, and just build up the ends with layers of sheet, then cover that with putty and round it off.

Depends on the era AH-1W you want to build. They used both 100 and 77 gallon tanks. The 77 gallon tanks have replaced the 100 gallon since the 100 gallon tanks can only be loaded on the outboard station. The 77 gallon tanks can go on any station but if you put them inboard of a TOW or Hellfire rack you shouldn't load the two in TOW missiles (upper and lower) or the upper inboard Hellfire. Typical setup is a 77 inboard of either. Seldom use 77 on outboard stations as rather have missiles.

100 gallons tank is 114" long x 18" dia. Aft end is pointed and pump mounts under outboard wing fairing.

77 gallon is 119" x 15", rounded on both ends and pump mounts externally on tally rack.

Good info, thanks... Now you guys have peaked my curiosity, and I think I'll make one of these. The shape is very easy to emulate. I went back and found a good shot I have of one on a Coyotes Cobra.
