Airbrush Compressors
Posted by Cobrahistorian on Saturday, November 20, 2004 12:40 AM
Hey all,

Got a question for you. I just got a new Paasche airbrush and the Testors mini blue compressor. No matter what I try, it seems like the compressor just can't push the paint through the airbrush. Anyone else had this problem, or am I just using a wimpy compressor and need to spend the extra $50 to get a good one?

This summer I got a Vivaz200 air brush with a cheap compressor (probably one similar to the one you have: It's small and blue) and the airbrush works fine with it. Then I tried a Badger 350, already had, with the same compressor and it didn't work. In the shop they told me that Badger and Paasche airbrushes need more pressure than Vivaz and Olympos.
So probably the compressor you got hasn't enough pressure for you airbrush.

I've got a cheap compressor that was not made for airbrush, but for general use, the thing is noisy as hell and has a 25 l barrel, but it works fine for me. I paid just over 70 € for it.
However I can't say I have any experience with Paasche, but both my Aztek and Badger work on it.
What is the max pressure output according to the manual ???

I used both an Aztek and then a Badger 175 through my Testors Blue Ice compressor... didn't have a prob.

make sure the air hose is screwed into the nipple well, it has a habit of loosening and you really dont hear all the air escaping with the noise of the compressor...

----edit---

oh yeah! I had this happen once, might have turned the nipple when putting the hose on the compressor, ends up I didnt get enough air. If you look through the body you can make out a rubber hose attaching the nipple assembly to the air source, make SURE this is not twisted, it would be the same as putting a kink in a water hose. the nipple assembly should turn so you can untwist it...

Thanks for the quick replies, guys. This thing is a hair short of being returned to Hobby Lobby. Max output is supposed to be 35-40lbs, which I thought was enough. The airbrush instructions say that it needs 30lbs or more for acrylics. I thought I thinned the paint enough, but it seemed to be drying almost instantly inside the needle.

I'm gonna see what I can do with thinned enamels and then give up trying.

Ok, the blue thing just sucks. I'm getting a new compressor. Never had this problem with propel cans.
