US Helo Crew in 1/35
Posted by Avus on Sunday, November 21, 2004 3:35 AM
Since finding US helicopter crews has often been an issue in this forum here's what I found (and bought):

These kits are made by Nemrod (resin figure line of Historex www.historex.com).
The first kit contains a standing crew chief/door gunner and a kneeling pilot/copilot.
The second kit contains a seated pilot, a seated copilot, a crew chief/door gunner leaning out of the gunner-window and the kneeling figure looks like a pararescue operator (he wears a BDU and not a flight suit).
The figures are well detailed and wear the new issue flight vest and SPH-4B helmet.
The bad thing on these kits are that the figures all have the same face and that they are not quite cheap: both cost me 52 Euro (approx 67,76 USD)

Nice figs! I wonder if the guy not in a flight suit is actually wearing nomex ABDUs? Any idea if they're going to put out crew figs with IHADSS helmets for Apache kits?

You're welcome petebuilt, that's what a comunity is for.

I'm sorry Cobrahistorian but I don't know if they are planning an Apche crew.
I already modified one head converting the SPH-4B to a HGU-56 helmet.
Regarding the kneeling figure, it could be an ABDU, but the figure also has a different helmet (HGU-26/P without visor?), a tactical vest and a leg-pistol hoster, I presume it's a Pararescue or SO operative and not a crew member.

Good question on the kneeling guy.

I like the idea that he is wearing ABDUs. If he is, he has cut off his left shoulder pocket and they appear to have left off the ankle pockets. The helmet is hard to recognize from the pics but does seem like it could be a HGU-26. The vest he is wearing looks like it could be a medics vest. There is not a standard for these that I know of, each unit determines it's needs and gets vests that meets their needs. The leg holster is not really much of a clue as to his duties as many crewchiefs (myself included) who prefer a drop holster to a shoulder holster.

I would love to see the one you did with the HGU-56. Was it pretty easy to reshape?

I know that there are no strict rules regarding equipment, so that figure could be anythig, I only thought that it's gear was typical for a PJ as I have seen it on photographs.

This is my HGU-56 helmet:

The figures are from CMK and they are not as good as Nemrod's.
The helmet was not very hard to reshape ... the difficulty was only in the size of the head!
What I did was: make the headphone part look square, add the battery for the NVGs, add the NVG mount and wiring, add the visor guide on the sides and add a photoetched microphone.

Your HGU-56 helmets look very good. Nice eye for sculpting detail. Did you use epoxy putty?

Avus,
Great job on the helmets! I really like the -56. If you still have time to toutch them up, try using helo drab for the -56, they are using a darker color for the helmets now and I think that it would match very well. I will include pics of my helmet with and without the faceshield when I put together my walkaround. Don't hold your breath though. I won't be putting that together until I get home in Feb or March. I will be sure to let everyone know.

Does anyone know of a U.S. source for the Nemrod kit? The historex site is less than helpful.

Thanks for your kind words, guys!

petebuilt I used epoxy putty (Milliput Standard) and Cernit (sort of synthetic clay that hardens in the oven).

Screaminhelo I can't corect the figures of the picture (they are already inside a Littlebird), but I will keep you suggestion in mind for the next ones. Thanks.

Glad you found where to get Nemrod figures, stephen_101st. I think they are a must for 1/35 helos (because there is no other kit around!Wink [;)])
