Army NOTAR's
Posted by grandadjohn on Saturday, December 4, 2004 10:08 PM
Know the US Army tested two factory built NOTAR helicopters, but never used them operationally. I am looking for any pictures of these Helo's, saw one in a book on US Special Forces, but couldn't buy it at the time.
Unit's testing may have been the 160th SOAR(A) or the US Army Aviation Test Board. Have tried google search's, etc. and found reference's to them, but no picture's.
I originally posted this in the reference forum, but got no response. Any help you can give will be appreciated.
Thank you in advance
John

Hi John,

From the US Army TACOM website:
http://tri.army.mil/LC/CS/csa/aahist3.htm

"Bell-McDonnell Douglas LH Super Team. Two "teams" presented designs to the Army for evaluation. The Boeing-Sikorsky LH First Team and the Bell-McDonnell Douglas LH Super Team. Though the Bell-McDonnell Douglas LH Super Team combat helicopter was never built, the design was to have featured Bell's 680 all-composite four-bladed rotor system and McDonnell Douglas Helicopter System's NOTAR (No Tail Rotor). The LH Super Team was to have had an all-composite fuselage, retractable landing gear, fly-by-wire flight controls, and state-of-the-art crew stations."

The US Army Aviation Museum also reports having a NOTAR OH-6A in their inventory:
OH-6A - 65-12917 - Hughes - NOTAR
http://www.armyavnmuseum.org/museum/collection/rw3.html

Also, this site reports a NOTAR under construction for the 160th.

Hope this helps.... Smile [:)]
